Hi all,

I was wondering if this was typical for a newly introduced Golden Ram's colour to fade? I think she's a she and she's been put in with a larger male in a community tank along with some platies, corys, and otos.

She was added to replace another Golden Ram that recently passed away. I believe that he was a he and was bullied by the other male.

Unfortunately I don't have any water states as my Ammonia tester ran out... So I won't be able to post up some water states until tomorrow...

what temperature are you keeping them at? they should be kept at 28-32oC but your corys wont tolerate this, unless theyre sterbai.
when theyre kept at lower temperatures theyre immune system will be suppressed, theyre digestion slowed and they will be prone to other diseases.

Theres a couple of factors here that I can think of that might well affect the colouration:

1. Stress of the move
2. The possibility that you've bought another male. If you've bought two males, the lesser males colours are more likely to be dim and for him to take on the appearance more like that of a female over time.

Got any pic's?

I certainly don't keep them at that temperature, I think I've got the tank at around 25-26oC but it is only the new one who's colour has faded. The large male that is still bright and cheery.

I should say that it's only the orangy body colour that has dimmed, the little blue(ish) dots on the fins are still bright.

I'll try and get some pictures tonight.

its most probably the move stressing them...you need to keep them at higher temperatures or they will more than likely die prematurely.

I tested the water last night and the Ammoina was 0, the nitrite was 0 (tho ever so slight colour change with the Nutrafin test) Nitrate... I seem to have "run out" of the 3rd re-agent... I suspect child tampering... pH 6 (which is normal).

I have gotten some pictures but they are imprisoned in my camera.... I thought I had the software I needed to get it off the camera... But seems I dont...

Right I managed to get some pictures done. Here is the new G-Ram (hopefully female)

And as a comparison the fella that I've had for a couple of months that I'm sure is male

It can be difficult to be confident in the difference in colours cos it can depend on the levels and conditions that the picture was taken, but I think that's pretty close to right.

The top fish (the new one) was quite a bit darker when she first arrived...

the one you have recently bought looks like it has come from a farm where they are kept in hormone filled pools along with antibiotics...this is the end result...

Temp needs to ba at least 27c

Ok? So what does that mean for me exactly?
that the ram is poor stock...it will remain relatively hardy, but will more than likely last only a few years, and will be infertile

Awww... poor little fishies... Well I'll do my best to keep them happy and not get any more to replace them, as that process of breeding doesn't sound to friendly.

Would I be able to increase the temp to 27oC with the other tank occupants?

p.s. are other Ram's breed in the same way?
