Here's a new foreground Hygro that I grew without hardly any effort, making it an easy plant to trim and grow.

For reference, the tank is about 22cm long and the black rocks are actually petrified sequoia wood that was burnt, then later petrified collected near where I live. Fish: 5 Tatia perugiae catfish and about 3-4 shrimp. A few snails.

hi tom that looks very nice what is the full plant name, and how tall does it grow, and what are its requirements.
regards john

Nice and simple. I like it.

How often does it need pruning to keep it looking like that, or does it stay low naturally?

Lighting and ferts?

The tank is honestly fairly abused.
It has only about 2-3cm worth of ADA AS, a small Azoo palm filter.
2x a week EI dosing.

Light is a 20 watt PC but is more like 8 watt due to the distance as measured with a PAR light meter.

So about 2.5 w/gal.
Water changes have been infrequent, maybe once every 2-3 weeks.
The plant does not need much trimming and does not bolt for the surface either.

I just tug the errant stems and trim with scissors and that's about it once every 2-4 weeks.

Tom Barr

I'm not sure what species it is, I just call it low growing dwarf hygro.

Hows about a name that plant competition? I propose Hygrophilia davespencerifolia, or more commonly known as "Crapweed".

dave thats well funny    my proposal is hygrophiliajohnstarkeyfolia, or more commonly known as no weeds (yet)

Strange Hygro, I've never seen a dwarf species like that. It looks a bit like polysperma. Maybe I could achieve that look wth polysperma and very regular pruning.

Nice plant.

It grows nothing like that weed, this is far easier to care for and maintain it's low lying habit.
Very nice and dense cover for cryptic fish also.

I'm thinking about scaling it up to the 20 gal tank I have.

Tom,

I notice in the latest edition of TAG that this plant is featured, and they have tentatively called it Hygrophilia sp. "Porto Velho". I wonder when it will turn up in the UK?

Dave.
