hey yall got my tank set now, two awesome little o's and a con, its kick ***. the smallest of the o's spends the majority of its time in a flower pot with three holes in it that he can stick his head out of and nip the fins of the larger one as it swims past.
Anyone have any ideas on how to make them not jump for food, and they seem to love a pat is this bad for them?
And dont they grow quick the little gobble munchers, theyd eat me if i cut meself into small enough peices!
Ill post some pics in a week or too.

they would eat u if u cut ur self up in small enough peices and how big is the tank

big enuf fish noobz- why is it that someone says they got new fish and other people wanna shoot em down by telling them the tank aint big enuf - i know thats were people like you are headed. just trying to bring a little of my enthusiasm to the forum, was there any part of my post that asked you to comment on my tank? did i ask any question relating to keeping the fish in question? no.
I was just curious as to wether any one has had success teaching o's not to jump.

ciao.

maybe he was just interested in the fish and was wondering how big a tank he would need to keep them himself?

if that is so i am sincerly sorry and humbly apologise and will quickly retract the statement (fish noobz if you werent having a crack let me know for all of the above to occur.). BUT i dont think im wrong and think that fish noobz was probly having a shot at me.
So i dont want an argument can we get back to the topic please.

Has any one had success changing there oscars behaivour, or another fish, hints on training, i know food would be a good reward but he associates me with food and jumping with food so everytime he sees me he jumps.

I don't see how you could teach them not to jump. If its that big of a deal just put the food in then close the lid.My big oscars do it all the time when there hungry and excited so i just make sure that i don't have any food in my hands when my hands are above the water or they'll lunge and my hand to get the food

well sorry for posting god friendliest fish forum around my f***ing ass

Hi Moneywasted

Unfortunately it seems that nobody is being unfriendly here but you. People get concerned because more often then not people are keeping large fish like Oscars in tanks that are much too small. Sometimes it's lack of research, sometimes they were mis-informed, but nevertheless it is a very common problem.

Instead of taking it personally, why don't you just realize people are looking out for the well being of the fish. As most people tend not to have tanks over 100 gallons, people get concerned.

A more appropriate response might be something like "Thanks for your concern but I'm aware of their needs" or "I keep them in a 100 gallon tank". And watch your language.

By the way, welcome to the forum

Welcome to the forum. LovemyOscar just about somed it up for on feeding, But if you would like to know anymore about them such as tank mates/other foods/water condition we would be more than happy to help you.
Congrats on the little fellas soon they will OWN YOU!

You are probably going to hate me for this but I will say it. Just let them jump out once while you are there. Be sure to put them back in right away though. They should learn. My oscar did this when he tried to jump up and bite his food container and now he knows to just stay at the surface, not above it. Sorry about the cruelness of this plan but it could save the fish from doing this sometime when you are not there to put him back in. Also, glad to see someone as excited about cichlids as I am. You made some great choices and you will probably like them more and more.

my oscars used to jump but they never landed out i held some shrimp on a chopstick like 4 feet high from the tank and they jumped to get it

well, don't have oscars so can't comment on the feeding . . .

A lot of references say that oscars are fine to handle a little bit, and hand feed well so I don't see anything wrong with patting 'em as long as you aren't rubbing against the scales . . . :D

Also, I have to side w/ moneywasted over the whole, "should or shouldn't we ask about how big the tank is" issue. We shouldn't assume everyone here is an idiot who didn't do their research w/o any provocation. It's kind of rude to treat all of our forum mates as if they were ignorant imbeciles or lying schemers who have to be cross-examined everytime they question about or buy a new fish. It makes this forum overly tense, annoying, and gives us the image of being over-obsessived nerds w/ no life.

And moneywasted is quite right that there are a fare share of people on this forum looking to shoot others down to try and gain some respect. I respect moneywasted for standing up for himself.
