Well you need some gold catfish and some gold minnows! (Sorry, just kidding  )

Welcome to TFF!

I'm not the best at stocking plans but I'm sure lots of our great members will be along to offer suggestions and help. We often find that if you cruise your local shops and look at pictures online you can work up some lists of things you like and then use that as a better starting point for discussion.

You've still got stocking space in that tank and you've probably met a minimum of sorts on your barb grouping. Overall tank stocking limitations, species groupings and aggression or other behavior issues between all combinations of species in the community are of course the 3 overall areas you want to be working through in your stocking plan.

Is your tank 30 US or UK gallons? What are its dimensions? How long since water first put in? How long since fish went in? All these are things the members will want to know to start to get an idea of how to start to help you.

A little off topic, but what you said in jest, might be an interesting idea. If I ever get the time and space it might be fun to set up a series of tanks with different colour themes :) Maybe there's a use for brightly coloured gravels after all :p

Hi thanks for reply
My tank is 30 UK gallons 80cmlong 50 cm high 45cm deep tank is mature about 3-5 yrs, last fish went in last weekend brought 2 gourami's on shop's advice, but they didn't seem to get on so i returned the aggersive one to the store and thought i would get some proper advice before i get anymore fish.

how about a nice group of bottom dwellers/feeders like corydoras..... there are some really nice corys out there and are really peacefull and fun to watch. this will also cover the bottom of the tank instead of packing in loads of middle tank fishes giving a more balanced look to your aquarium. take a look at the cory section in the catfish area on here for a few ideas of species to see if you like them :good:
just a small warning though some like cooler water in the 22-23 degrees area but there are some like sterbai that prefer warmer temps... :good:

If we are going for the gold theme, how about some nice gold laser cories as the bottom dwellers?

Gourami's are known to be aggressive if you put 2 males together, that might have been your problem

Hi thanks for reply's
not to sure about this gold theme would like some different colours of fish but some bottom dwellers seem like good idea, not sure what other fish will be compatible maybe some Gold Tetra.
i only brought 2 gourami's on the fish store recommendation as they said 2 will be fine even offering a special price if you buy 2.

Yeah, I don't know why it didn't strike me at first but we're talking gold gouramis here, which are just the gold color variation of the blue/3spot/opaline gourami, the most notoriously mean of all the gouramis (I think!) so we're definately off to an aggressive start for this stocking. Does anybody know how gold barbs fit into this picture? If they're anything like rosy barbs, that could mean pretty aggressive too! If all that turns out to be true then that's going to be a significant stocking factor. Fish are going to have to be looked at for whether they can stand up for themselves in this tank!

The gourami i have now doesn't seem aggressive as i returned the aggressive 1,apart from the corries anyone have any idea of what other fish would be compatible.
Many thanks

A Bristlenose Pleco or two and a shoal of tetras would look nice

The gold gourami doesn't seem aggressive now because its alone except for the barbs and barbs can more than hold their own. Also, another good thing you've got going for you is that gouramis are one of the few fish that exhibit individual differences in "personality" or aggression level. You may indeed have an individual that will be less inclined to bother other fish. I agree with Jonty's recommendation, sounds good.
