Well, after an eel getting himself trapped in the filter, ive blocked up the holes, but hes still abit stressed...So ill get full tank shots later.
Hes some pics of them acclimertising yesterday:

Heres the halfbeaks, i got 2 males (allthough i now realise i shouldnt of...) and 3 females.

These are my two yellowtail spiny eels (Macrognathus pancalus). You can see that they have very yellow tails. They're about 4.5" each, and one of these guys was the one who got out....
Image020.jpg

And finally, my rarest eel, the half banded or half barred spiny eel. Hes 3"ish. You can see that the top/upper part of his body is much lighter, than the bottom, hence the name, half banded...

Ill get a full tank shot soon too.

Thanks, Mikey

I know, they're terrable lol
What ill do, is try and get a digital camera off someone, and get some good pics...
Ive blocked the places where the eel got in with some stones, and im just gonna try and make a nice dark place somewhere else in the tank, so that he/she doesnt need or want to go somewhere else...Ill just have to do abit of moving arround. I have some live brineshrimp and daphina (allthough most of the daphinas been eaten) so ill try and tempt them all out. The half banded eel is very active, whereas the others are only out when its darker...So i presume they either noctournal, or semi-noctournal...
They are very nice the yellow tails...Its a shame that theyll get too small for your tank cane, cos they do add alot of colour...
Do you think that when everything gets to its max, that ill be over-stocked? (Im gonna get a nice eheim external, to help with waste :D )

Thanks, Mikey

i think your stocking is fine especially with a nice new eheim ;)what filter is running atm?

The one, the only, Juwel Stock!!!!
I know their crap, but mines got a decent flow on it (600lph) and its handleing everything fine...
Im gonna get a eheim ecco 2236 i think... 600plh, which isnt bad for £70 off ebay
How would i do it? Would i run both filters for a few weeks, then just take the juwel out??? Or would i take the media out of the juwel, and put it in the eheim??? <<<< Actually, i dont want to do that, cos i wont be able to remove that media, cos it will have all the bacteria on it...

Mikey

i would run them side by side for a month if you dont want to seed it with old media from the jewel

Yeah, i think that would be a plan :good:
Not sure which would be best though, a eheim classic 2215 (620lph) or an eheim ecco 2236 (60lph)...
Both cost about the same ammount, but i dont have any idea which would be easier to clen and maintain, or use -_-
Any ideas?

Mikey

eheims classic filters do a great job,id go one up from the 2215 and get a 2217(1000lph)it may seem like overkill but once the filters been running a good few months you lose some performance

Hmm, abit much money i think....
I could get a professional, which at 700lph isnt bad...But i dont know what their performance is like..
Ive posted a question in the hardware section, so hopefully somone will have abit of experiance with them

Thanks, Mikey

Ok got a couple more pics (excuse quaility, ill try get a proper digi camera) and im trying to upload a video from this phone, but i cant find where the file is being transferred to, so dont know what to do...

Firstly, heres a full tank shot. I havent had time to add my plants, but i will do soon enough:

Bit difficult to identify those halfbeaks from the photos. They're definitely Nomorhamphus, and I am fairly certain one of two species:

Nomorhamphus liemi
Males have red, black, and blue markings and beaks that curl downwards. Females bigger, similar colours, but just less brightly coloured.

Nomorhamphus ravnaki
This species has red rather than red, black, and blue patches on the dorsal and tail fins. The anal fin is yellowy. Males have a straight beak marked with red. Edges of the anal and dorsal fins are black. Females similar but less brightly coloured, more yellowy rather than red. This species is never deliberately traded, though how "rare" it actually is might be a point of debate. I've certainly had this species in batches of Nomorhamphus liemi.

The two species are identical in terms of care.

Cheers,

Neale

Thanks for the reply neale, theyre defineately the Nomorhamphus liemi, because one of the males has black on his beak, and they both have red on their tails, and a blue hue (if thats a word...) on the undersides of their bodys. And the males have downward curling beaks :good:
Thanks neale

Cane, they are burried under the bogwood, and on the photo marked, right side of the tank, you can see them both. One is buried to the left of the rock on the right, and you can see his/her head poking out, and the others tail can be seen below the halfbeak, on the same photo.
Both of them have been out today, so their getting much braver, which is good, and the half banded cant sit still!!! I will get some daylight photos tomorrow. The yellowtails are ace, and its quite nice when their out.

Thanks, Mikey

The blue should be on the fins. But it does sound like you have N. liemi. Nice fish, enjoy!

Yeah, theres some blue on the sub-dominant males fins, but also some arround the gill area...
Im pretty sure theyre the liemi....

Thanks, Mikey
