New Fish Tank

Hi Guys,
This is my first thread so please be gentle with me. I have just set up new tank with filter & heater. I used the appropriate amounts of tap safe, & filter start. But Its been five days, of water getting cloudier day by day. Is this normal & if so how long will it last before the water is clear? I am a little bit concerned at the moment as to the condition of this tank. One other point worth mentioning, upon opening a bag of gravel i noticed there was a strong smell of what i can only describe as almonds is this normal? Your help would be really appreciated as i am going mad at the moment as to what to do next.

Its possible its a bacterial bloom causig the cloudiness... as for the smell of the gravel, not sure as to the cause of the smell, did you wash before putting in the tank?

Do not buy any fish!! (not yet anyway)
