Hey Nick

Just wanted to ask how the mpanga was and did you manage to get the problem in check? Another one my m. aurora developed the same problem as the other two, so that makes three aurora in total (pointing finger at supplier)!!!. The first one I had to euthanize, but the other two I have isolated and have begun to treat. They all had the same symptoms of a hollow abdomen, loss of appetite and spitting of food (similar to your mpanga). I have started to treat with Interpet No9 Anti Internal Bacteria, the effects of the treatment seem very quick to work as both fish produced excessive amounts of white spiral fecal material within the first day and now two days later both fish have regained their appetites to some extent. Just thought this info might be some help if the fish in question was still having problems.

Thanks Tanks , I may try that mine is still exactly the same I keep expecting her to pass away but she keeps going, I`ve tried to catch her but it`s impossible without taking the whole tank down, my other female Mpanga looks the same a bit now aswell.

Definitly keep me imformed of the results and I may try it , did you treat the whole tank ?

Hey Nick,

I didn't treat the whole tank, I had to take most of the rock work out to get them, but I had to do it anyway to catch another holding lab!!!! Treating the entire tank is an option as the medication does not effect the biological filter in the tank. So if you wanted to, you could get away with not having to catch the fish although you would go through more medication cause you are treating a larger volume.

I treated the fish in the little 3 gallon fry tank that I put together. The course of medication is two treatments, once on the first days, then four days later. You wait for another seven days without any water changes and hopefully at this stage the parasite or what ever the problem is will be nipped in the butt!!

This is a perfect excuse for you to break out the tank that you had bought for Jesus the piranha fry that was wondering around your tank during the cycle. Dr Nick, you are required at the hospital!!!

I had a quick look at the two fish this morning before I came to work and from what I can see both of their activity levels are up, and the hollow belly syndrome has greatly reduced! I will be adding the next treatment tomorrow and I shall keep you posted with the healing progress!!

It`s now home to another miracle fry possibly a Hongi , it must of come in the water with my first fish somehow.

I might give this treatment a go, I could put the lone fry in a little fry tank within my main tank ?

Whats with the Jaws DVD nick, is that suitable viewing for baby fry?

I put that there to acclimatise the baby fry to larger fish so when he/she is realised into the main tank it`s not so much as a shock when the larger Mbuna are around.
I felt these measures were neccessary as the fry is on it`s own in the tank.
Don`t worry ! I worked up to Jaws , I started with Finding Nemo then Shark Tale before moving on to Jaws.
:D :D :D :D

What size is the fry? I would say that you could get away with leaving the fry in the extra tank and put both the female mpanga's in and then treat the lot!! Its should not effect the fry. If the fry is big enough or smart enough and provided with enough cover it should not be snapped up by the mpanga, but it is a gamble. Or just like you said you could get a small fry net for the main tank. From my experience I think that the little fry nets make a display tank look terrible and I avoid it where possible.

Anyways, let us know what you decide to do?

You went straight from "Finding Nemo" to "Sharks tail" without doing "The Little Mermaid" between them? Thats a huge step up, I'm suprised that the little fella didnt die of shock! :shifty:
