I bought a mickey mouse platy today but didn't get a really good look at him before we left the shop. Got him home and put the bag in the tank and his gills don't look right. They look red and like it's been cut.
He's still in the bag from the shop, I haven't put him into the tank yet or added my tank water to his bag yet as I'm not sure what to do with him or what it could be.
any ideas?
sorry these are the best photos I could get.

also around the red lines, the scales are silvery white, different to the rest of him

I can't say for certain, but it looks like a congenital abnormality; deformed gill covers are very common. It shouldn't affect he fsih in any way.

It was for my son who thinks it's been cut and is quite upset by it. Do you think I should take it back to the lfs?

Are you sure it looks cut and not just its colouring?

Just had a look at google images and you might be right. oh well, my son will just have to get used to how his new fish looks.
