New Fish Decision..?

Hi all, been thinking that my tanks looking abit bare, so thinking about getting some more fish over the weekend but cant decide on what...

At the moment i have in my 55 gallon 2 discus that have paired up, 5 cory's along with 3 otto's - so it's looking a little bare around the mid to upper levels of water.

I've been thinking along the line's of getting maybe 10 or 12 rummy nose tetra's, along with maybe 10 Harlequin rasbora's. My thinking is that the harlequins will pretty much stay in the top third of the tank, while'st the rummy nose are mid to bottom (my tanks quite tall for the size).

I'm not sure on to go down the route with the two different species, or just have a few more of the same type ie: 15 or 16 of either one.

The tank has sand for a substrate planted into which is various sword plants/dwarf chain swords, i've a fluval 405 external for filtration an do a 30% water change each week.

Be interesting to get some feed back, as always good to get somebody's else's view point.

If you keep the tank at a slightly higher temp than usual for your discus, go with the rummy nose.

Temp's set at 28, ph is about 6.5 to 6.7.

I personally would choose one species over two smaller groups! say 20-25 of one species looks amazing!

You still have choise, even within the brackets of harlequins and rummynose!

Have you looked at Sawbwa Resplendens? (personally id go all males, better looking and for some reason colour up better without females). They are closely related to the rummynose...

Or with the rasbora you have the espei and the henglei (Copperline or Lambchop Rasbora)



Personally I really like Volcano Rasbora, the males far better than females but they are an interesting species and you have to work a little harder and maybe wait a little longer for them to colour up but they are gorgeous!

This is the shape of them but there are no pictures of coloured up specimens, imagine the outline of each scale in dark purple and the fish colour bright pink, like the brightest pink on a harlequin. They also get a little larger than both harlequins and rummynose at a nice hefty 2".

I love clown rasbora too! But never had much luck keeping them, seem very prone to bacterial problems, though maybe better in a tank than on a system i dont know! I cant believe more people dont keep them! (get to 4" though)

Hi MBOU, thanks for all the links - certainly opened my eye's up to alot more choice lol.

Thinking along the line's that a singular shoal would have more of a visual impact, as well as the general well being of the fish being more comfortable in a larger group.

I've got a couple of fairly good aquarium shops, near where i am ie: trimar aquatics an a good ol' maidenhead so guess it's a case of having a wander around an see what i can find - thanks again for the links

Went to maidenhead today an picked up 15 rummy nose tetra's, really glad that i got them as there an awesome schooling fish - just what i was after.
