New Filter Advise

i have just brought an external filter for my tank.i currently have an internal.my question is how long do i leave the internal on before i can remove it and just have the external running? should i put any of the sponge from the internal into the external??

ive never had to do this before and ive always started with an external at the beginning.but this tank came with an internal.

I leave them for a month normally or I just move the matured media to the new filter

so i can just put the mature sponge from my internal straight into the external and then remove the internal?

Two choices:

Squish all of the media from the internal into the external and it's up and running straight away.

Or run them alongside each other for about 6 weeks.
