I went to the pet shop yesterday with the intention of buying some bottom feeders for my new 5 gallon... and instead I picked up a Senegalus Bichir! I haven't seen one of these at a local shop in ages, and since I've always wanted a big fish, I couldn't help but get him while the getting was good :D. He's just a little baby right now; 3-4 inches long, tops. He is temporarily in my 5 gallon. My mom is tired of our 29 gallon saltwater (mostly because of rampant algae growth; it was her bright idea to put it in front of a window,) so she's giving our few fish back to the LFS and I'm converting that tank to freshwater. That'll be Eligos' (as I named the Bichir) home until he outgrows it. Right now he's still small enough to safely have female bettas as tankmates... awwww!

Cool fish Synirr.

He looks Pre-historic.
Thats because they are prehistoric, bichirs are one of the oldest fish species on the planet.

Nice fish synirr, dont trust it with those female bettas for too long though, you would be very suprised just how big bichirs can open their mouths.

Oh believe me, Ive already seen the little guy eat bloodworms, and with the way he wolfs those down, I don't plan on trusting him with anything anywhere near the size of his head or smaller . Right now the bettas are nearly as big as he is, so it doesn't look like it's going to be a problem for a while. Thanks for the advice, though. I'll make sure to be especially careful what I choose for tankmates when he gets bigger.

In regard to my last comment, maybe I should be more afraid for Eligos! He's intimidated by my female doubletail betta. A second ago I spied her swimming up to him and staring him directly in the face in that "what in the world are you?" sort of way, and he freaked out and swam off!
For a fish that can be fed beef heart in adulthood, he's a big scaredy at the moment
