Hello,
I have a new 75 gallon 48"×20"×18 that I am getting up and running with a marineland 360 canister filter. There will be sand substrate with primarily rocks and driftwood and a few plants throughout. My plan is to have at least 2 EBAs, a school of Barbs, a couple bristlenose plecos and maybe a few angels. What are your thoughts and what would you add/remove? I am open to suggestions with the EBAs as the only ones that are not negotiable lol. Thanks!!

Hi! Do you know your general water hardness? You can find it by looking up "City Name general hardness". That is really the deciding factor for buying fish. I'd say you have space for 2 EBA as long as they are in line with your water hardness. I don't recommend keeping anything that lives on the bottom with them, as they are semi-aggressive. Also I wouldn't keep barbs with cichlids like that unless you are keeping a peaceful variant as they are very well known to nip fins. Depending on your water hardness some of these fish might have to go off the list aswell.

My water is on the harder side. All of the fish I have listed can be sourced through local breeders, so would be able to tolerate the levels. My plan was to get barbs that were more peaceful and I have read that with the right size school the fin nipping is less of a problem.

Nice, although I appreciate that they are tank bred, this doesn't undo their 1000s of years of evolution, and I would urge you to look at fish better suited for your water. Seriouslyfish.com is an incredible place to check out fish needs.

Other than the angels not generally being suited, which of the other ones do you have a problem with? We have hard water here, and that is why I was going with the EBAs. I will also be adding driftwood which should help with the hardness.

Not many barb species are suited to hard water.

There are some potential candidates.

Actually for hard water, you should consider African Lake Tanganyikan fish .

Stay away from South American fish.

If you don’t want to go down the African route you could look at Central American cichlids like electric blue Jack Dempsey, Nicaraguans or salvini keep them with big livebearers and some plecs would be ok too.

can you confirm how hard your water is with a figure? Sometimes water referred to as hard is actually pretty neutral and your original plans could work.

My city has the parameters set 187mg/l

187mg/l is hard, you could look into a RO water system to reduce the hardness or just pick fish that are compatible like African Cichlids. Above 180mg/l is considered very hard water.

Sorry not great at converting the figures do you know what that is in ppm?
