Hello Peeps.
Bit of advice of how many and what Tropical fish I can have in a new 60L tank. I already have 2 Koi Angel and 1 Golden Barb in a 20L tank (had a few more but others died). New tank will have coral and plants and new fish have to be compatible with the fish we have now as had them a couple of years now. Son really wants a Siamese Fighting Fish, male or female, but not too sure about these. was thinking more like Guppys, Bettas, Platys, Tetras, Barbs,  maybe a small Silver Shark or Bala Shark or Rainbow Shark but understand that the sharks can grow quiet long. Would like colourful and fun fish and was also thinking about some bottom dwellers aswell. Any advice would be more than welcomed.
Thanks again

Hi,

Im glad that youre getting an upgrade as a 20L tank isnt really fit for much, but with your current fish a 60 L will not be good for them either.
A few things, angel fish are cichlids which means that they are commonly aggresive fish and anything smaller than them are more often than not in danger or being attacked, especailly when they pair off. Tetras are ok as they are fast but only if they are big enough not to be eaten.
Golden barbs are shoaling fish which means that you should be aiming to get 5 more, they become less tressed and more entertaining, they are active fish and need loads of space to roam about, you can keep a group in 60 L.
Angel fish prefer tall tanks, longer and wider tanks can hold more fish, so if you havent already bought the 60L then I would try and aim for getting something much larger if you have the budget for it.
I would say no to all the other suggested fish for the new tank, especially no to the betta and sharks.... the platys and guppys will be eaten by the angels and any fry they have will not survive long, they will be snacks.
Glad youre asking for advice though, I was much the same with  my first tank, I stuck anything in there without knowing my water parameters and thinking all fish are just fish and should be ok as long as there is water! boy was I wrong!

A tank of 60L really isn't big enough for one angel, much less the rest that you mentioned. I agree with nic1, that you should try to get a bigger tank if you can!

I agree with the other posters; I'm afraid you need a bit of a rethink.

Your angels need a deep tank; preferably around 50cms/18 inches, and at least 90cms/3 feet long. Have a look at one of our other member, Akasha's big male angel here; http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/439593-who-can-identify-the-gender-of-these-two-angel-fish/#entry3723232to get an idea of how large they can get.

You're going to have to either get a larger tank, although a 60l would be better than staying where they are, or rehome the angels and get something that will be happy in a 60l.

Also, you can't have coral in a freshwater tank.

Thanks for the advice but cant afford anything bigger than a 60L at the moment. I have 2 koi angels, 2 golden barbs and 2 Dalmatian mollies. All get along just fine, never fight and swim all over the tank and all love the Tetra Prima Mini Granules at feeding time. How many more and what fish would be suitable to add to the tank if any. whilst I appreciate all the advice from here, friends who have kept fish for years and the so called fish friendly stockist it still can be very confusing, some friends say those fish cant go with them fish while others say yes they will be ok same with the fish stockist and here. I want to look after my fish properly and don't want to add anything that will put the others at risk. Only been keeping fish for about 2 years now, lost a few in the early days but all seem to be good now. My ideal tank would be a much bigger one but with lack of space to put a bigger one in a 60L one is as big as we can go. Would love some gouramis and some more mollies and some plecos  any other suggestions would be appreciated.
Very confused newish fish keeper

I don't want to sound too harsh, but if you can't accommodate a larger tank, then you should really rehome the angels; it will negatively impact their long term health if they're not in an appropriately sized tank.

Before we recommend fish species, we need to know both the hardness and pH of your water. If you don't know, then you can find out on your water supplier's website. We'd also need the dimensions of your 60l; a long tank will house larger and/or more active fish than a tall tank would.

I know it's tempting to listen to fishkeeping friends, or your local fish shop, but it's best to take the advice given on here. If anyone gives out wrong advice, someone will point it out, and we've all spent a lot of time taking the best advice, learning from more knowledgeable members and the most up to date scientific evidence :)

Live in a hard water area, Hertfordshire, and the PH of the tank water is 7.4. Dimensions of the tank are approx. 61cm long. 31cm front to back and 36cm height. Suggestions on more fish would be great.
