hanging the new sponges won't do alot as the bacteria need water following over them at all times so they can gather oxygen.

the way i said would work the best IMO.

yeah add the fish at the same time with my method or all the bacteria will die and you won't have a filter on the tank with the fish in.

That sounds like the best way to me! I will probably have to take 1 new filter sponge out to fit the old ones in. How long should I then leave it before taking out the old ones and putting the new one back in?

as a precaution around a month at least i would say maybe longer.
