fairly new plants so im going to see how they do untill i start adding fertilizers or anything, if they start looking brown and shedding leaves i'll have to increase lighting or add some CO2 but thats a last resort

Personally I'd be adding ferts straight away. If plants start to starve then they leach ammonia. Ammonia + light = algae.

Also, if you did come across brown or shedding leaves, then increasing lighting is the last thing you want to do. The dieing leaves are telling you that the nutrients you are supplying are not enough. More light increases the demand of the plants, which would only make your problem worse.

The Juwel has 1 light tube if I'm correct? Means you don't need CO2. When fully stocked, you should only have to be dosing a trace fert maybe two/three times a week.

Switching the air pump off during the day will preserve any natural CO2 in the tank so the plants can use that. Feel free to turn in back on at night.

Btw, nice tank. I like the sand, it looks very clean. ;)

Thanks for the advice! i was thinking about ferts but i want the plants to benifit the fish and i dont want to sacrifice oxygen in the water for CO2 really id rather have brown plants and healthy fish lol but i know there is a happy medium so thats all im going for so might try some ferts, any suggestions? just tablet ones ok?

and no your wrong it has 2 light tubes in the hood, one is bright and the other seems dimmer and a slightly different colour, not quite sure on the reason for this... maybe someone can enlighten me (no pun intended :p)

It is possible to have good CO2 levels and good O2 levels coexisting together. Many folks think high CO2 means low O2, but it doesn't. We strive for good CO2 and good O2 levels in our planted tanks.
Some tubes can look dimmer to us however the PAR being given out is probably the same as your "brighter" tube (all to do with lumens etc).
Generally plant food tablets go under the gravel...
With two light tubes, you'll probably want a fert that contains both micro and macro nutrients. Tropica Plant Nutrition+ gets my vote.
Be on the look out for carbon deficiencies too, which I wouldn't be suprised if they turned up (due to two light tubes over the tank which increases the demand for CO2.).

right ok i will do thanks, we have some aquarium ferts at work ill look to see how much they are. i saw this stuff at an aquatics shop the other day which was like carbon in a bottle or something and the bottle was suppose to do about my size tank for 3 months. was about £7 would that kinda thing be no good?

Probably liquid carbon like Seachem Excel or Easylife Easycarbo. It's good stuff, just dont overdose as it can kill shrimp and some plants. Dose daily. You might get away with not injecting CO2 if you dose with liquid carbon.
