New 10G Stocking

This morning, I woke up to my German Ram dead in my 10 USG tank. I had had him for 6 months, and we have moved twice since I have had him. We just moved last week. I think he died of shock because he looked fine yeaterday. But now, I am looking for a new stocking.

The tank has been up and running for 1.5 years. So it is a very established tank. I would like some stocking suggestions though. I would like to have an apistogramma. I can eaisly get rid of my 6 neons, if needed.

So throw in some stocking suggestions for a 10 USG tank. But please make sure that you include 1 dwarf cichlid! Thanks a bunch!

The German blue ram will have died due to not having Ideal water conditions, They demand temperatures of 28-32oC and must be kept in water that has a PH of 5-6 and a GH of 0-12 Degrees.

The 6 neons will be fine, I would up it to 8 if I were you, and then I would add a pair of apistogramma borelli or hongsloi.

The water parameters were fine. I only want to have 1 apistogramma. I want it to be a male. I'm afraid that a pair might get too agressive during breeding.

So your temperature was between 28-32oC? and the PH was between 5-6 and the GH was between 0-12 DGH?

A single male would be fine, providing its requirements match that of the neons

They don't NEED a pH of 5-6. They can live in 6.5, which is waht my pH was. And yes the gH was between 0-12. He was born and raised in water with a pH of 6-7.

I would like to have a bit of variety in the tank, and i find a school of 6-8 neons kind of boring...

German blue rams are the most ill treated fish in this hobby IMO, I wish shops would stop selling them.

10 gallons is a small body of water, 8 neons and an Apistogramma leaves your tank more or less fully stocked, you could try a small group of corydoras, but you must be diligent with water changes.

I would be afraid to try the corries, because I have heard mixed reviews of them being kept with apistogramma. What other type of schooling fish would I beable to have if I got rid of the neons?

I have cories in my dwarf cichlid tank in which i have both Borelli and aggazizi. I wouldn't put a borelli in a 10g my male is a good 4inches and very active. You could however put a single male aggazizi in there, mine are wild type colouration but they come in reds also and should be fine with your neons as should all dwarf cichlids, cories are only a problem if you have a breeding pair, dwarfs are cave breeders and attack the cories as the cories will eat the eggs in many cases.
I'd stick with your neons and up the shoal to 8 then get a single male aggazizi in the colour variant of your choice. Make sure your have some bogwood and plenty of plants (dwarfs appreciate quite heavy planting).

Would a cacatuoide be okay instead of the aggazizi? I prefer the cacatuoide over the aggazizi.

cacatuoide may get a little large as they are on a very similar size scale to borelli, they are also ever so slightly more aggressive, with heavy planting it could work and before i kept dwarfs i would have said go ahead, but after keeping and observing my own tank and seeing the behaviours of these fish i would reccomend a 15g minimum for borelli or cacatuoide as they are larger than other dwarfs and very active. Try searching a double red aggazizi they are very similar to cacatuoides but smaller.
