Nerite Snails

i bought 3 nerite snails on saturday and im a bit unsure on their health. 2 have dissapeared completely (havent escaped - no way out) and the 1 i can see just doesnt move much. the water is fine im sure but dnt know what to do about them.

Snails can be extremely sensitive to water quality (at least in my expereince the nerites are, not so much pond snails etc). I generally find mine hanging our near the filter sleeping, or amongst plants. Also do check around, out of my 5 I found one had escaped and it had dried up the poor thing next to the tank. If there is a lid check it carefully especially around light fittings etc. Lastly do test the water params, and perhaps the water is not oxygenated enough for them

thonk for replying, i seealed the tank b4 i put them in so they cant escape. the water quality is good apart from slightly high nitrates and a bit of an green water which i am dealing with. the 1 i can see now is completely inactive. how do i check if its actally died or not.

the high nitrates may be affecting them but cant be sure as not an expert, one way to check is if properly dead they hang loose. Another is to prod (gently) the tap door and see if any movement. Sorry couldnt help further, let us know how they go. You could try putting them in a tub with dechlorinated water of same temp and some blanched veg to see if can tempt them..

It was on its bk @ the bottom so ive
Put it the right way 2 c if it moves overnight 2nt. Not happy tho, even if the water chemistry isnt right 4 then id expect them 2 survive longer, im thinkin they werent all well in my lfs b4 i got them now.

Nerites are one of those snails that will just keep popping out of the dang water until they get used to it at their own speed lol! Whenever I put some in a new tank, or the water parameters change wildly, etc, the nerites all hop out and hover about the water line until they feel good to ease themselves back in. In fact, I think it's fair to suspect that your water params have gone a little wonky! Lord knows my guys have flagged a few pH swings for me!

I am not sure how long they have been hiding on you for, but it is likely that they are camping out in their shells for a bit until the warm up to the water. Give them a day. Perhaps change the water to alleviate the nitrite situation a bit, but honestly they are slow starters lol. I think they'll be fine in a day or so.
