Hello,

I have a 10 gallon tank where I had 2 Neon Tetra's/3 Glofish/2 tiny guppies and an CAE. They have all lived together since I started the aquarium a couple months ago. Today I noticed one of my Neon's is missing, gone, vanished! I have no idea where it is at. The other Neon has been alone all day and seems completely out of sorts. He is not swimming with the glofish or guppies, he is kind of hiding in the plant on his own. Color looks good and he came out to eat. Could he be lonely?? Will another Neon take to him since I did not buy them together?

Thanks!!

As for the missing fish, who knows I am baffled.

Hi and welcome to the forum!

Neon Tetras are a schooling fish. They like to be in a group of 5-6 but preferably more. There has been research that has proved that keeping them in a group of at least five will make them healthier and happier, although many people have been known to keep fish at a lower quantity.

This also applies to the Danio GloFish

Did you check if he jumped out of the tank?

How big if the CAE? That are known to attack/kill/eat other fish once they get past 3" - I would get rid of this CAE.

My recommendation to you is to get a total of 6 Neon Tetras and 5 Glo Fish. That will put you fully stocked and your fish will be happy swimming together. Basically like two little clans lol.

Do you have any live plants in this tank?

Good luck!

The missing neon could've been eaten by the CAE depending on how old it is. They really need a larger tank, as they can easily reach six inches, and get to be really aggressive.

Thank you very much. I will get rid of the CAE (it is maybe 2''). Seems so little to each another fish, but the guppies are even smaller than the Neon's. I don't have an algae problem so makes sense to get rid of it. I will get more Neon's tomorrow and see if that brings the other ones mood up a bit. I thought maybe it jumped out but I can't find it anywhere! Thanks again...

Thanks for the input, I will give the CAE away this week before it grows anymore...

If you don't have any real plants I suggest something like Java Fern which is low light. You can tie it to almost anything. It helps keep the water cleaner.

I forgot you had guppies. Just getting the neons would stock you up then.

Do you have any other tanks?

When the guppies start reproducing they will over populate you quite fast.

Just wondering, do you feed the CAE anything other than the algae in the tank?

Also the neon could have died then the CAE and other fish eaten the dead body :( :rip: or he could just be hiding?

This is what I found on the CAE

"can attain 12 inches, but in aquaria usually 6 to 8 inches.

When young this fish will graze some algae from rocks and wood but it requires more basic prepared foods, frozen bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp, etc. As it matures it eats even less algae."

Oh no I know you're supposed to but I wanted to know if they fed their specific one haha it could have killed the neon if he was starving.

Supposed to what? you're losing me lol

I don't think the CAE eats flakes or regular pellets....maybe...

You can get freeze dried or frozen bloodworms, daphnia or brine shrimp. Live is even better. It eats algae as well. Some people throw in algae pellets. but like it says, as they get older less algae is consumed.

Sometimes fish disappears randomly and could be due to many things. Some can die due to water/stress etc... and be sucked into the filter never to be seen again or died behind a decor and rotted away or nibbled by other fish. Sometimes when a fish disappear and you cant find them for 1 or 2 days only for them to pop up again. This is sometimes due to stress where they would hide for awhile until they feel better, but we'll never know.

Thanks. Very well said.
