after water conditioner at recommended dose?

take a handful of substrate out of your tank, place it in a cup and pour vinegar over it
tap water 7.0 after conditioner. sorry stupid me what do u mean by substrate will do that once i understand thanks youve been great

the gravel or whatever is at the bottom of your tank...also what else is in the tank decor wise? are you adding any PH buffers? there is something rasing the PH

ok i got gravel. a piece of sponge on which the airstone sits. then there are some rocks over the top of the airstone which i tested with vinegar and didnt fizz and then theres some glass like crystals. 3 potted plants and 2 wood plants. i have also got a ornament in there. should i remove 1 of all the objects and test with vinegar

im not adding any buffers at all. just use safe water very occasionally after white spot .

test everything apart from the wood and plants.

something is making it rise.
ok doing it now il start with the ornament as that was the 2nd object to go in and dated is about when the ph rose on results. thanks and will let you know! thanks for your patience

done everything with no joy except the bit of sponge? wouldnt be that would it? i have rinsed them all off is it ok to put back in?

i dont have a clue what it could be then. the ph should not be rising like that, there must be a cause...one other thing i suggest is:

leave some tap water in a tupperware box over night, and then test in the morning and post the results

ok will do that. wouldnt be the sponge?. i cant understand it either. are the ornaments ok to go back inn after vinegar and a rinse

yep ornaments are fine, as are the sponges. i think the CO2 in the tap water will have gassed off and raised the PH up to 8.2 the only reasonable cause IMO, the water board will stuff the water with CO2 to drive down the PH to prevent lime scaling in the pipes

ok then i put the rinsed off ornaments back . will put some tap water aside and test ph sun morn and post on this forum . thanks again . not sure what the answer will be

ph of overnight standing water untreated and treated is 7.8 before conditioner and 7.4 after conditioner. any thoughts please

as i thought...as water comes out of the tap it has a high CO2 content, CO2 is VERY unstable in water and will gas of quickly, when CO2 is injected into water it creates carbonic acid which lowers the PH, when the CO2 gasses off, the PH rises again.

any ideas? ?

How olds the tank? Neons are quite weak fish and will drop like flies in new tanks...

Also, if you have co2 in your tap water you could leave the new water in a bucket with an air stone in it overnight. This will gas off the co2
