I have one brichardi and am hoping to get a mate for (her I think). She is in a 20g with 3 penguin tetras. Can I leave the tetras in or will a breeding pair of brichardis kill them?

You can expect them to kill the tetra's, though there's a good chance they'll be ignored until spawning time.

ok thanks, out with the tetras then.

The penguin tetras are off to the lfs today as I have no suitable tank fot them. They are nippy whatnots. Looking forward to getting a male brichardi today. Any clues on signs of a male brichardi? I'm pretty sure the one I have is female as she wouldn't tolerate any other female fish when in my 30g.

I keep three Brichardi together, they are quite small at the moment (2-3") but I think the males have slightly longer finnage than the females. If you look at a group in a tank together you should be able to see the difference. As for tank mates mine are with 2 Lamprologus Leliupi and they get on OK but obviously they are never gonna be best friends. Just try to make sure they are all a similar size and they should be OK.

Chill,

Mark.

Tetramod, have any spawned yet? If they have, then I'm very surprised, it must be a large tank, or you simply got lucky with a peaceful pair If they haven't... wait till they do before recommending the mix.

The differences between the sexes of these young fish is subtle glolite, it won't be an easy task. The fin part is a tendancy, not a rule, and nearly impossible to differ when at a young age. Unfortunately if you simply try to add another fish to the existing female there is a strong chance one will be killed. Getting a group and allowing them to form a pair from it is ideal.

Glolite I wouldn't add any other fish like tetramad since in such a small tank they will freak when they spawn and probably kill their tankmates.

No I'm not adding any different species. The penguin tetras are coming out and I'm going to get 3 or 4 more brichardis and hope for a pair, then take the others back. I'm pretty sure mine's a female as when I first got her she was put in a 30g with a pair of apistogrammas (as a VERY temporary home) and she attacked the female apisto repeatedly but ignored the male. She is only 1 inch at most and I didn't go and get another single brichardi thank goodness, after reading Freddyks advice.
