My son got a 10 gallon aquarium for his birthday at the end of August. Having followed the advice of the pet store people, we bought two platys to live in it. But only one of the fish survived the fish-in cycle. After a fair number of challenges (my tap water turns out to have very high nitrites and nitrates), the tank is now cycled and we're looking for roommates for Cary, a male red wag. I've read the "appropriate fish for a 10 gallon" thread, and I've jotted some options down on a list, but I'm wondering if there are additional "restrictions" about fish that get along with platys?

Also, the kids really liked the ghost shrimp at the store. Are they an option? How many?

(I am good with regular paper math, but it turns out that fish math is tough for me. Thanks everyone here for being so patient with all of us noobs in here all the time.)

Platies are community fish and get along with pretty much every fish (except of course the ones big enough to eat them...)

Isn't spiderman good enough company?

I personally would advise you to get some female platies. He won't be very happy without any females :/ Also they will most likely breed and you'll get babies!

There are lots of fish that would do well with you platy, and spiderman. Pretty much anything recommended do a 10 will be fine with platies.

Thanks everyone. He was definitely happier when his original roommate was alive. She only lived about two weeks. He nearly succumbed to the fish-in cycle as well, but he pulled through. Least I could do would be to get him a couple of girlfriends, no?
