If you are seeing ammonia in your tank, the plants are not thriving. Plants that are thriving can prevent an ammonia build up in a completely uncycled tank. I would suggest that you either have dead plant material or an uncycled tank. Stirring up the substrate will do nothing to help out that problem.

ya i do have dead plant material ...:( in my tank . so i was asking that if i remove all the sand of my tank and clean it properly will it effect the cycle of my tank coz till now from the time i have set up my tank i only do a half or 70 % water change ..... or u guessing that my tanks cycle has been destroyed ?? so should i clean my tank fully ??/ ??

Errr, why not just take out the dead plants?

Tom

As long as your filter stays damp and doesn't come into contact with any 'raw' tap water, the bacteria will be fine for a few hours, so taking out and cleaning your sand won't mess up your cycle (not any more than it is now anyway, if you have a lot of ammonia).

Well said Tom. If the problem is nitrogen added from plant decay, removing the plants will definitely help.
