I saw the cutest little cichlid at a semi-local pet shop today that I couldn't ID. He was in a tank labeled for kribs and "African cichlids", but he obviously wasn't either, and when I asked the employees no one knew... they had all just assumed it was a krib

Anyway, I can't provide much info on it and I'm mainly just looking for suggestions I can Google, but it looked to me like a jewel, only much lighter than I'm accustomed to seeing them though it was obviously in full colour. It was only about 3" long and sorta white and silver. Are there any different colour morphs of jewels?

Whatever he was, he was the cutest little thing I've ever seen and very personable. If I thought I had a suitable tank I would have bought him in an instant

There are different species of Hemichromis termed as Jewel Cichlids
If you would like to do a Google to see if one of those resemble yours.

Thanks for the tip BigC, I'll investigate. What makes it hard is all the pics I find are of mature fish and this was just a little guy. I might go back to the shop later this week and I'll bring my camera and see if it's still there...

EDIT: This is very close to what I saw, but it seems like the fish at the shop had a slightly more sloping forehead than that...

That makes it twice as hard what with young cichlids having Juvenile colouration that sometimes does not resemble the adult in any way.
Good luck with the pics.

Well theres Hemichromis guttatus, the common jewel fish (green tail) and Hemichromis bimaculatus, the same basically but with a more elongated snout and pinkier and i had a hemichromis lifalili which is a red forrest (like the one in the pic), so theyre different, except the blue neon is a line bred colour just like the gold ram.

There was actually someone in the shop who knew what it was today... turns out it was a baby flowerhorn!!!
It didn't have any of the typical "flowers" and is very pale so I had no idea! I'm on love now though... definitely getting one whenever I have the space for another large tank. Most personable fish I've ever seen
