A good colourful and hardy loner fish would be a betta. ;) And you could keep one with a small group of harlequins. They stay nice and small and they are also very hardy. :thumbs:

harlaquins? got any pics

betta fish hmmm good choise

Here's a little info and pic about harlequins.
I keep some in my 15g and they're lovely fish. One of the first fish I ever got. And I still have those original fish now. :D

P.
Edit:I notice they say a ph of 5-7. Mine is a shade under 8 and they're fine in it. They also get....jiggy with each other alot so it doesn't stop them acting natural. I'm sure I'd have had fry by now if it weren't for the tetras and the harlequins themselves eating the eggs.

cool fish what about the betta

thanks

Bettas vary a great deal. The only thing that never changes is the solo part. They hate other bettas (well the males do) and will fight to the death. And there's so much info and a zillion piccies in the betta section of this forum I couldn't possibly direct you anywhere else. :) So go to the betta section and read and look at piccies! Oh and here's one of my oldest betta companion ollie. :wub: And a piccy of Curly who's a bit of a nutcase below.
Hugs,
P.

Did the algae eating fish look like this;

? Personally the only algae eating fish i'd recommend for a 12gal are oto's, but they can be quite fragile. Bettas are hardy but im my experience their personalitys can vary too much to rely on them to thrive in a community tank enviroment, they can either be too agressive towards other fish or too slow to compete for food enough or too weak to prosper in a heavily filtered tank- when they do thrive though they really do well, so the choice is up to you :) .
