Need A Heater For 6 Gal

It's getting cold here in Florida, and the Fluval 25 watt heater I bought has not been capable of maintaining a steady temp. Do you guys recommend any heaters for a 6 gallon aquarium? It's the Fluval Edge an I love it.

The temp has been at about 75-76 degrees Fahrenheit but it's going to get even colder tonight and here on forward.

fluval should be factory set to heat to 26c, if it's not up to is any decent 25w heater which is adjustbale will be fine

Check the setting on your heater. It should be big enough to take care of an indoors 6 gallon tank easily.

If a 25w can't manage a 6 gallon I'd be wondering if the heater was faulty.

That's right Bigbruiser it is preset which I guess is the main issue. And not once have I seen the indicator light ON, I assume the temp of the tank must get pretty low before the light kicks on.

Do you actually have a thermometer in the tank to give you a reading?

Yes Soybean I do. I have a digital thermometer in the tank. The heater works, problem is that since the temperature in the house has dropped its been incapable of keeping the tank at 78 degrees. It's even colder tonight, I wonder how warm the water is right now? When I left the house this morning, the water in the aquarium was at 75 degrees, perhaps it's lower now, I'm not sure; the heat in the house must have kicked in by now, but I'm not sure how much that would help.

75 degrees isn't THAT bad, not ideal but not drastically low - you could try wrapping a towel/blanket around it to insulate it a little more, even just at night.

If the heater is malfunctioning, check to see if it is still under warranty and try to get a replacement. If it isn't, replace it with any 25w heater.

And 78F is what, 25-26C? That's pretty warm - what fish do you have? I keep my tank at 24C - which is more like 75F!

I've become very protective over my little betta ever since he got Swim Bladder Disease/Disorder. Thus, I want to give him an optimal environment where he may dwell for several years. Am I being too cautious here? It's my first fish and aquarium.

Well you're quite right in saying betters do prefer it a bit warmer and I keep them at about 26c.

So the advice you've been given stands - wrap the tank in a blanket at night, make sure it isn't in a draft, and source a new 25w heater.

This morning I bought a Hydor Theo 50watt, and it's working like a charm. It's adjustable allowing me to set the temp as i please and has an indicator light that comes on while it's heating. I really like it, and by the way it's smaller in length than the Fluval 25w so it fits nicely in our tank.

Hi just to clarify, I have 2 of these Fluval heters. They aren't preset to a specific temperature (26'C), they are preset to a temperature above ambient. i.e. 4-6'C above room T. But you can control them using an external thermostat.

were talking about Fluval edge 25 watt heater the op has already confirmed, they are not preset to a temp ambient as how would they know what ambient would be for the user. The integrated thermostat ARE set to 26C and can increase aquarium temperature by 4C/7F above ambient room temperature

Exactly you've stated it your self, they may be set 'to a amximum of 26'C' but will only heat the water to 4-6'C above ambient (i.e. natural room temp), so if your room tem drops to say 15'C at night, it will only heat to a maximum of 19-21'C. I know this because I use them too, and have the box in front of me.
