""Why you ask if a non-aquatic plant would survive in water?""
Because some plants have terrestrial/non terrestrial forms, some can survive in both water and in a terrestrial setting, and some are fine provided they can reach the surface. Thanks though :>
""The african fern would be a nice alternative to that though.""
The small star-like plant is Pogostemon helferi (downoi)- very rare, very expensive. That fern is definately going to rot, but you could replace it with Microsorum pteropus (java fern- very nice, easy, common fern) or any variety.
Cool, thanks guys, the ferns are gone and I've replace the blue tube with a new 8 watt white tube. (Will probably upgrade to and overhead lamp after christmas).
Will grab some shrimp soon to get things ticking over.
Yeah algae is a good thing, but after a few bad (and recurring) experiences in other tanks with hair algae (everyone in my street suffers with the stuff (everyone that keeps fish that is)). Higher airation seems to be the best cure.
