It looks very like a congo tetra except for it colours, I dont think Congo's have yellow like that on them. It could be a young tetra. What size is the fish?

There is a fish Hemigrammopetersius caudalis, that has the common name Yellow Congo Tetra. Like the regular, it has extensions to the fins and a filament in the caudal. These traits seem to be minimal to say the least on the fish you picture. What size is it, could be very young, the fin extensions develop with age.

thanks for the replies. i got two of them and they are 2 inches and nearly an inch deep. how big do they grow?

In good sized, well mainained tanks, the regular Congo Tetra can grow to 4"/100mm although frequently less. The Yellow Congo Tetra is also a large tetra but slightly smaller then the regular. The Yellow is also a bit more demanding of water conditions and can be difficult to settle, although once over any initial problems tend to be okay.

At the size your are, I would expect to see some of the fin extensions. Can you see them, i.e. are they just not apparent in the picture?

no theres no finnage at all. maybe they are too young yet??
