Interesting. The usual culprits are ph and/or temperature. Did that not seem to be the case in the discussion you heard?

not everyone keep them the same temperature or pH . it's probably down to nobody keeping track on how many people are keeping them and numbers that they keep and breed ,

I've also seen them with a size of 6 inches.
At some point only males were left at my place. I still kept them for a long time. A friend of mine turned out to have only females. So, I gave my remaining males to him those bulldog splitfins breed.
Those are huge! Do the males get bigger in that species?

Here’s an update on the little man! He’s super lively now, and is starting to plump up! Seems like the lateral line has become more clear too

and @emeraldking , looking through your website, he seems to match up a lot with the male Zoogoneticus tequila.
though it's not apparent in my photo, he has the characteristic yellow tail edge developing as well.
Here you can see the dot at the tail node, and also a faint lateral line like mine has.

I'm wondering if anyone can confirm this? If so, it will be quite the journey trying to find him a school of friends.

Just let him develop more to confirm the correct species. There are more goodeid species with a visible lateral line and where males tend to develop a yellow seam in the caudal.

I thought Zoogoneticus tequila when you first posted the photo. I’ve had a colony for almost 2 years and your fish closely resembles my juvies. Time will tell.
The species is frequently available for a reasonable price on Aquabid if that’s what your fish turns out to be.
