My whole tank has white spot!!!

i'm just thinking maybe i've used too much medication as the neons are said to react badly to the chemical treatment. I haven't done any water changes since i've had my tank so would it make any difference if i did one now or should i do it after the infection has gone?

I haven't done any water changes since i've had my tank

How long have you had your tank?

I do a 30% water change every week, if anything does break out (which is rare) I do a 40% water change (maybe a little less if Ive done one in the last couple of days) treat the tank then leave it at least 4 days, then change another £30% of the water, then dont treat the tank for another 3 days......if things havent improved I treat it fully again.

Rather than not treating it for that 3 days you could treat it again after the initial 4 days with half the recomended dose as i know some people do but I personally dont as over treating a tank can cause future problems.

...oh, and it might pay you to keep meds in a draw for emergencies such as this, I keep white spot, finrot and fungus, green away and internal bacteria med at all times.

As you've found out things can just seem to happen over night so the sooner you catch it the better chance you have of everyone making a fast and full recovery....

...which Im sure with everones help yours will. :)

When you do your water change, siphon off from the BOTTOM of the tank... this is where the free living stage (tomites) stay, on the bottom 20% of the water.

I had horrible problems with ich but rid of it after weeks of water changes and meds. Good luck.

I setup my new tank on Monday a week and a half ago.

ok my med says to treat every 48 hours. I'm gonna do a 30% water change tomorrow and then use the med again the day after.

I've also got some Melafix, should i leave this until i see no spots on any fish or just not bother using it?

I can't offer you advice on MelaFix, I tossed mine out after I almost killed 2 of my bettas by OD'ing them on it.

I've heard that people really have had good luck with it, though...

I don't know anything about MelaFix.

Personally, I would do a 20% water change from teh bottom of the tank each time before you add meds. This will get rid of a good portion of hte parasites hatching out of those cysts. THe meds reduce oxygen in teh water, so if you can, add an airstone. The water changes may help in getting O2 to your fish and since your tank is probably still cycling? it will reduce ammonia and nitrite, probably two things that made them susceptible.

Read the posts on whitespot (ich). Also bump up the temp to 80F if you can.

Best of luck!!

i'm gonna use the melafix tomorrow after my water change just to help with the scales that the fish have scraped off when they 'flick'. Hopefully it won't react with the whitespot med when i use it the day after.

the ICH in my tank has cleared up completely thismorning, it was only the pim pictus that had it but that was treated on sunday night with interpet whitespot treatment.
I'll do a 30-40% water change today and that should be everything back to normal
Whatever you use I hope it works :)

to add to this problem my platy has just given birth!

how much white spot treatment will i now need to use being as i've got my fry in a breeding net in the same tank!?

You could try half dose to see how they get along with having the fry, but when i had fry they are quite tough little guys.

I think i'm losing all my neons. It looks like they've caught neon tetra disease as a secondary infection from the white spot. I've already lost one and it was very pale and had lost its neon stripe.

It could be due to stress that they are losing there colour,if you added the full dose i would dilute it down abit with a water change.
