I've just came back from work and noticed all my fish have white spot! (5 neons and 3 platies). I didn't notice this in the morning so i think it's just suddenly appeared while i was out.

All shops are closed now so i'll have to wait until tomorrow to buy a treatment. Whats the best treatment to get? Are all my fish gonna die!!?

Take a deep breath. :)
If you start treating them first thing tomorrow you should be fine.
I really like to use Maracide by Mardel to treat ick, but pretty much any ick treatment will be okay.

Are they still swimming around okay?
They may get a bit lethargic when they have it, and even as you're treating them. They just don't feel good when they have it.

When's the last time you saw them? Was it Friday? And they were okay then?

yeah they seem to be swimming around ok.

I fed them this morning before work and didn't notice anything on them but now every fish has spots. They were all fine last night so i guess it only started today.

I think it might have came from the water i got got with my fish because 2 days ago i had to change 1 of my fish and when i bought it back home i added all of the water from the bag it came in into my tank too!

hi ive noticed my 2 neon tetras have white spots on there fins i have never seen it before is it ich the spots are really small im worried they are not going to be ok can you give me some advice ive never had ich before.

Well, technically ick is always present in a tank, unless you treat it to the point where it's killed off, but generally then the fish would die to. Usually, healthy fish can fight off the disease with no problems unless something is messing with their immune system for some reason.

SOOO...
the problem with it appearing in your fish means that the fish were stressed out by something that's changed (I'm guessing that the addition of the new fish stressed them) or by poor water quality. I'm not sure in this case which it would be, but if you get them treatment they should be fine. But make sure you get it first thing tomorrow morning!

guppyman -
if your fish are showing any signs of white spots, you should treat them right away. Pick up some sort of ick treatment - maracide if you can find it, but pretty much any ick meds will work.

BOTH OF YOU - also make sure you've got really good aeration in your tanks while you medicate. Meds take oxygen out of the water and your fish can suffocate. Also, if you can - raise the temp up to 82 degrees. That will speed up the cycle of getting rid of the ick.
Good luck!

OH! ALSO...
if you have carbon in your filters, you'll need to take the carbon out while you medicate or it will render the meds useless!!!

Ok i've got another problem with this, I'm going to get some treatment for the white spot tomorrow morning. The thing is tomorrow is also the day i'm doing my water change so is it best if i treat the tank in the morning and then do the water change later at night or do my water change first and the treatment later?

do a water change then turn the temp up to 80-82 degrees. Then add meds and hope for the best!good luck

wat i did is did a 40% water change then added the full dose of med, 3 days after did a 30% water change and added half the dose of med i added first then another ,3 days after that just to make sure it was gone did another 20%water change and added a quater of the med i added first and then it seemed to dissapear. :D and didnt lose any fish in the process.

I was told that i shouldn't bother doing any water changes for at least 2 weeks as my tank isn't mature enough to need to do this.

Also, If it's been a week since i added plant grow, water conditioner and cycle should i add it to the tank again today or not being as i've added the white spot treatment without changing my water for the first time? or do i only add these again once i do a water change?

Since your tank is not fully cycled yet then I wouldn't use meds....It would also help if you buy some filter material like nitra-zorb that would absorb and get rid of ammonia, nitrite and nitrate....My advice to you is to use the heat and salt method..raise your temp all the way to 30C/85F then add 1-2 tablespoon of salt per 10 gallon...but when your doing this make sure you put and airstone or something to agitate the water cause there will be less oxygen at high temp....leave this for 10 days...doing water changes every other day if the fish looks really bad..then leave the temp for at least 3 days after all ICH is gone...Using this method won't hurt your bio filter at all....I'm currently doing this method on my tank and it's working good....Goodluck...

won't the increase in temp that high kill my neons!? They're pretty sensitive compared to the platies.

So i think i'll leave the water changes until the spots have gone.

Right now my temp is around 26-27 degrees instead of the regular 25 degrees i usually keep my tank at.

I added a second treatment to my tank and have read somewhere that it's dangerous for scaleless fish and tetras! I'm not sure if my neons will be ok because it contains Malacite green. Right now their fins seem to be flicking up and down along with their gills. I haven't noticed before but do neons normally do this!?

Is there any need to do any water changes yet to maybe get rid of the cysts on the bottom of the tank or should i just wait until all the white spots have dispeared off my fish?

Im having a similar problem with my tank at the moment, I recently bought a pim pictus catfish, I didnt put the water from the bag in the4 tank because I never do just incase.

I know they do best kept in groups but I dont really have the room but tghere are plenty corries etc so he should be okay but after 2 days he developed white spot, probably due to the stress of the move.

I treated the tank 3 days ago but he has still got it, none of the other fish have it and all seem to be swimming happily including the ill fish.

One of my mollies swims a bit funny at times but the next minute he is fine.

I plan to do another 30-40% water change today but I'll leave it another 4 daysw before treating the tank again as Imn worried over medicating the tank will cause problems for the other fish in the tank.

I use the interpet range of medications which have always worked fine but I suppose its different depending on where you live (Im in scotland)
