I stopped by the newest Wal-Mart in my area and of course, I had to stop and look at the fish. What I saw there totally SHOCKED and APPALLED me!! In the platty tank there were several fish with ick, one with tail rot so bad there was barely any back fin left and most of the other platties were laying on the floor of the tank listless and barely alive it seemed. In another tank there was two angel fish lying dead on the bottom of the tank and a gold guaramie floating at the top. Over half of the goldfish were dead in the goldfish tank. I seriously couldn't believe how bad the conditions were!! It totally sickened me and reinforced my beleif that you should NEVER by fish from Wal-Mart!!

Remeber that it could of been a day that they got their fish in and maybe they havent fully inspected them all. I know that at Petsmart where I work the day the fish come in a lot of fish dont make it through the stress of the big move and sometimes fish do come in with ick or fin/tailrot.

and thats why MOST decent lfs who think more for the fish than the cash have a seperate place to store the fish an not in the buying areas... -_-

I'll never go to wall mart to buy fish. I'd rather go to a store that only deals with fish, so the chances are good in terms of them knowing how to keep their merchandise in top shape and for the customers to be happy and come back again.

The wal-mart around me used to have a terrible case of ick. But, the last time I checked everything seemed to be in order. They carried a lot of fish including oscars and dwarf gouramis. I was actually surprised to see more than goldfish and neon tetras.

Mike

btw, I still would never get my fish there!

I wish the animal cruelty laws could apply to fish also. Our local PetCo is the worst, and when you tell the manager about problems such as ich or dead fish he tells you that "they are just fish and he doesn't have time to fool with them..." :grr:
My petco is like that too. I think something should be done about it. Fish are living things too. I rescued a guppy from walmart once because I felt sorry for him. After treating him for tail rot he was a beautiful Sunrise guppy. I loved that fish. I had him for a year.

make a special mdicin for them

First take 2 parts gasoline and 1 part oily rag and insrt into a glass bottle. Next flambe the protruding oily rag. Toss like you would a baseball. :p

Does not constitute a threat or recomendation ;)
Do not perform these actions ;)
Do not try this in your town ;)

I posted a thread almost identical to this awhile ago but i was stupid enough to buy two blue gouramis that wiped out half my tank from ich. The answer is just don't buy fish from them and if you see someone considering one recomend a LFS you like.

WalMart is Terrible!
Not to long ago, I was looking at the fish and of course there were dead ones in just about every tank.
But the people they have working there don't know anything about fish!
There was a girl buying a 10g tank and the guy working was selling her 2 PACU!
I almost died! I explained to her and the guy working how big they get and luckily she decided against it.
They should be banned from selling fish!

Back in the summer of 03 there was a similar thread about betas in cups i havent been to a wallmart the nearest equivilent would be somewhere like petcity long rows of 1 foot tanks filled with fish that dont get on and wont fit in most tanks. many of them are ill because they have just got off the plane and are now being looked after by people who's other job is sweaping the floor, selling dog food, working the checkout, catching venamouse snakes and spiders for that 11 year old who thinks it looks cool and then back to the checkout again. The kittens in the glass tanks? or puppys in rabit cages? how do thease places cary on running i dont know :/ it sux p.s. before wallmart sue me some of those references where about other private retailers.
