The Nirites test is as important as the others. You could have bought them all in one kit (Mine was £17 for all 4 kits. This was the API Master kit)

Once ammonia is being processed you will see a rise in NitrItes then nitrAtes. Testing all three will allow you to see whats going on.

Seriously though this is an excellent site to have all your questions answered (and to have a bit of fun!) We've all made some mistakes and have to live with them. Sorry about the loss of some of your fish but if you do as people advise on this site you will become more experienced and your fish will love you for it and you can enjoy your hobby.

There is a tremendous learning curve with this hobby. And we all learn as we go. It's a lot to absorb but it's worth it when you end up with healthy and happy fish. Once you get into the groove, your blood pressure will go down, too!

I wouldn't ask that particular store for any more help, though. It's fairly obvious that they're just trying to make sales and are mostly blowing smoke out of their arse.....
