So I went to the LFS today to purchase my first fish for my new 94 liter tank. I had all different kinds in mind but not platys, never really drawn to them. So what did I bring home? 4 x red platy and I'm glad I did, they look wonderfull!

What to get next???????

Any ideas any one?

Swordtails and platys get along really well. And with the many different colors you can get them in, you can have a really colorful tank. I have 1 x Red velvet Wag Swordtail (male) 1 x Red swordtail (male) 1x Mickey Mouse Platy (Male) 1 x Sunburst Wag Platy (fem) 1 x Panda Platy (fem) and 1x Bumblebee Platy (fem) I also have a pleco, and 9 swordtail/platy hybrid juveniles all wrapped up in a 40 gallon community

You can probably add a bumblebee catfish (microglanis iheringi) in there and a Dwarf Gourami. A male Betta too, although its either the gourami or Betta not both in the same tank. A sorority of female Bettas would be good too. Did you cycle the tank?

Sounds very familiar mate, i usually go thinking i don't want something then leave with what i didn't want

I wouldn't advise any more livebearers as you will be over run with them before long. Do you know what sex Platy's you got? You ideally want more females than males as the males will constanty harass them wanting to breed.

I think two of my males might be gay cause they don't go after the females lol.

Hi, thanks for the comments.
Yes my tank is cycled and all four fish look female to me. I was thinking of dwarf gourami next and possibly some panda cory and later on some kind of pleco, not too big, maybee a bristle nose or a clown pleco. I havent looked into sword tails before, I'll have a read up on them before I buy anything else!

Thanks again. :good:

I wouldn't suggest swordtails, they can get fairly large and are quite active, I don't think your tank is quite big enough for them especially if they start breeding as well as (or with!) the platys.

A dwarf gourami is a great choice, lots of character to them. They appreciate a lot of plant cover.

Corys are always fun, what's your substrate like? Sand is preferable, but very smooth, rounded gravel is also fine (nothing rough or sharp).

You could always consider a dwarf cichlid, maybe a trio of apistogrammas - cacatuoides or agassizi are good choices for beginners.

And a bristlenose would work as well.

Female Swordtails can reach 4" + !! So be wary of adding these to your tank. Blue Dwarf Gourami's would be a very striking contrast to your platies. :)

Thanks for the ideas. I have sand in the bottom of my tank and lots of plants in one third of the tank, some wood and pebbels.

I have been looking at honey yellow gourami and think I might add a trio of them, possibly some neon blue dwarf rainbow fish and panda cory also.

Will take a look at the cichlid you suggested, ta.

To be continued
