I have posted this in the new journal but am hoping for more response here.

I am really not sure how the flow passes through this sump or where I would put the skimmer, return pump, heater, etc.

Here are pics, please excuse the naff carpet, that has to go but other work has to be done beforehand.

Then there are some lids

This one has a cut out in the corner that I presume is for the pipework, would it not need one the other side though for the return??

This next one has me completely baffled (excuse the pun) it does not fit across the width, it is too small, does it go elsewhere in the sump??

Hope you can shed some light on this, is a bit weird to me.

1st section (RH Side) is for your overflow from the main aquarium
Skimmer in the first compartment (RH side) Heater and return pump in the last compartment.
If I were you T, I would hang the skimmer on the side and place the pump and returns in the first compartment.
I would get an external pump (Eheim) for the return and place it outside the sump (gives you more room inside) but will need shepherds crook, pipe and taps
With the weirs being so low it looks like the former user has allowed for any mishaps from the main tank overflows, allowing for additional water to be trapped in the sump and not causing a flood should anything go wrong and back syphon.
The mid compartment you could house cheato, although from the grit in the last compartment it looks like there's also been some LR in there
Take a look at my small sump config it may help you somewhat

The covers are just splash guards/coverglasses I think, you'd need to tilt and turn them to see how they configure
Well that's the way I'm reading it from the pics

I know, I have a solid wood floor to go down, it has been sat in the room for 3 yrs (under table) he has to do some work under floorboards before it can go down. The previous owner put it down new for me, she thought I would like it. :dunno:

Anyway, back to the sump, thank you for taking the time before your very important concert to reply, it does make more sense now. Will need to see just how much room is in the cabinet before I decide on internal or external pump.
