Well i have to say, since i gave away my red tail black shark there seems to have been a balance returned to my tank. When i got home after work yesterday, i was plesantly surprised to find my pair of bolivian rams mating behind a piece of driftwood in my tank :D

Sat and watched for a while as the female lay her eggs all over the wood. The male then fertilized the eggs. Having never seen this before i found it utterly facinating

Is there any tips anyone can give for trying to ensure the safety of the fry once hatched?

congrats 328neil, it is fascinating to watch fish spawning, developement of fry and the parenting of them, it takes fishkeeping into a whole new level. good luck with them, they should do a good job of protecting their young but watch out for egg eaters and other fish feeding on they fry.
Regards Angel

How gutted am i :( Got home last night and no eggs to be seen. Im trying to figure out what could have eaten them?

In the tank i have

1 x Geophagus Balzani
1 x Swordtail
1 x Marble Plec
4 x Red eye tetras
4 x Cardinal tetras
8 x Rummynoses
1 x Corrydoras Sterbai

I set up a breeding tank last night so once the cycle has finished i'll put the rams in there.

Probably all of them would have eaten the eggs if they noticed them (not sure about the Geophagus Balzani but only because I haven;t got a clue what that actually is :) ).

Edit: Congrats on getting them spawning though :) I have a pair of Rams in my community tank and hope they will start spawning soon (only been in for a month but really starting to colour up a lot now). I dont hold out much hopes of the eggs surviving for very long (lots of tetra's and cory's in the tank also) but you never know.

Sorry to hear about the losses, no doubt they'll try again soon enough :p

On another note, i recommend getting atleast 2/3 more cory's, one on there own will be nowhere near as happy as a shoal.

Well hopefully they will. I've heard once you get a mating pair then your laughing :D

Hopefully the second tank (breeding tank) should be ready by the weekend. Its all on and running but i dont have a light for it yet. On the case today though
