My Poor Guppy's Fins :(

okay so my main tank is a 90 gal freshwater tank that consists of balloon mollys guppies both male and female, neon tetras and 1 blue dwarf groumai and a few assasin snails here and there. however my male guppies are getting there fins nipped and recently one got nipped quite badly, however i have no idea who is doing the nipping, im sure its the tetras or the groumai but i dont really want to move them both if its only the groumai or the tetras doing the nipping. so who do you guys think is the culprit ? i have a cycled 33 gal tank i can move fish into but naturally im a little nervous to move fish that are already so healthy.

Hi there,
From my own experience with neons I wouldn't be inclined to say it was them as mine are the least aggressive fish in my tank.
Although I've never kept gouramis I have heard they can be slightly aggressive at times so I would perhaps say the gourami?
I gave my guppies to my brother as I couldn't cope with the breeding! They nip each others fins, so it may even be guppies nipping guppies!! Do you have any females or just males?

i have 4 females and 2 males, the second male i bought only a few days ago cuz he had the most georgeous tail!! i feel so bad that i put him in there just so he could have it mangled

I know it's horrible =[ it wi grow back don't worry. Thing is they could be fighting over the females, but I doubt it since the females out number the males!
I'd put it down to the gourami, but as I said I can't be sure as I don't know much about their temprent other than they can be slightly grumpy!
My female guppy that I kept after getting rid of the males has recently got her tail nipped, I think it may be my cherry barbs =\

Hi, I was always told that neons if they were the same size as a gourami they would show teeth like a pirahna. Betta owners would say never put neons with bettas as they can shred them so I would have said it was the neons. Gourami tend to be fairly laid back and don't have teeth... Just my opinion.

I've got my neons with a betta and they get on fine. Mine aren't huge, but they are a decent size and I can't say I have heard anything about them having teeth!
I think it will probably be a mystery until you see some of your fish chasin one another or being aggressive at all?

Honestly, I'd say it's the mollies. They nip at the fins of my guppies.

neons are well known for being fin nippers especially if you don't keep a decent number of them! (at least 6+)

I would think any of your fish could be the issue. My guppies shred each other's fins, especially when I add a newcomer. They have a whole little pecking order. When my dwarf gourami was in with other fish he was a terror to my guppies- he actually killed one in one bite while I was watching.

If the guppies that have been in the tank awhile aren't getting nipped at and it seems to happen mostly to new fish, I would blame the other guppies showing the new guy who is boss.
