I got two platys on Friday. At first they were fine. They swam all around and looked happy. But today I noticed that one of them has been spending a lot of time in the reef. This is the first day he has been inside it. Could he just feel more comfortable inside? They are both females, if it helps. They are eating fine.

Can you post a clear picture of each of them?

Also, what about bullying?

What are your water stats, tank mates, etc?

Platy's are meant to be in groups of 6 or more. When they are in larger groups, they aren't as shy. What's your tank size? Are they eating when you feed?

My camera can't focus on fish. I tried so many times. Its a 10 gallon, and they do eat.

They aren't a schooling fish. They loosely shoal, but just a few should be fine.

Platys need at minimum fifteen gallons. Is the platy in your avatar one of yours? It's hard to tell from a thumbnail, but it looks to be a pregnant fish, not squared at the bottom, but probably pregnant. Is this the one that hides or do they both hide?

What other fish are in the tank?

No, the platy in the thumbnail is a green lantern. I found the picture online. Nothing else is in the tank.

I think I posted on your other thread.
I actually started with two platies myself some years ago that came pregnant as well, a red and a yellow. One always hid from the start, she was just never looked right to me or behaved right and died a year later though she was never sick. It was the smallest of the two. I think it was genetical or the way she was raised was not healthy enough. The other one lived nearly 4 years and is the grandma of all my platy population. She gave birth a few times enough to produce males too and now I have so many I can't count.

I'd suggest just keep an eye in case she came in sick with something Watch out for flicking/flashing, thin belly, etc..A healthy platy doesn't hide but it's not necessarily a contagious disease.

Ah, I see now. I don't have my glasses on. Forgive me.

Don't worry about it. I'll see what I can do about pictures. Might be hard though, as the MM platy darts away the moment he sees me. :p

Is it the MM platy who is hiding?  She does not look heavily pregnant in your video.  She may be stressed or sickly or the water parameters are not correct.

Can you tell us exactly how this tank was cycled and what the current reading for ammonia & nitrite are?

She came out soon after I turned the light on. I think the sunburst platy looks pregnant. Her stomach is getting bigger.

goldfish98 - I've been looking through some of your past threads and I'm starting to notice that you tend to avoid questions about your water stats and cycling.

If you want us to help you can you please tell us how you cycled this tank?  Do you understand what cycling a tank means?
