My Oscars

Nice oscars, what size tank are they currently in?

They're in a gallon tank with one common plec (soon to be exchanged for a couple of syndontis cats).
I'd like to upgrade the lighting to 2X40 watt CP, which I have at the moment but I'm worried about algea growth so I may end up sticking with the 2X15 watt tubes that are above the tank now.
It just looks so drabby though.

Very nice Oscars, I have a pair that get on quite happily with a large common plec.
However, I also have a couple of brown spotted/upside down fish (don't know scientific name, maybe the syndo's that you are thinking of adding), and the Oscars do not get on with these. The cats constant activity/gobbling up most of the food before the oscars get a look in doesn't go down too well.
The plec's more laid back, slow swimming attitude seems much more compatible with the oscars.

Just my opinion, regards Don

Most of the food I offer my oscars floats either right at the surface or slowly sinks to the bottom.
I'm wondering if your syndontis cats go to the surface to grab the food?

Both really.
Food that floats is quickly devoured when they go in to upsidedown mode, then they go to the bottom and finish off anything that gets past them.
Their stomachs get very distended and sometimes they eat so much that they have to regurgetate later.
I have to hand feed the oscars, otherwise they'd get very little to eat.

Well then, I may not bother getting any syndontis cats then.
They are nicve looking oscars aren't they? :shifty:

Yes they are lovely oscars. But please don't just take my word on the syndo's. I am short on experience and knowledge and I'm sure that someone with more of both will be along soon.

Regards, Don

One of the local Pet Stores has some syndontis for sale at 3 bucks a piece...they were selling them at 30 bucks each.
My oscars are about 5 inches long, the cats are about 3....I was actually more worried about the cats being eaten by the oscars than the cats out competing them for food.

Well in that case - go for it. I'm sure there is no chance of the oscars eating the cats. :good:

they look gr8 mate...why cant you add plastic plants...ive managed sucsessfully and if they pull 1 apart its easy to put back together and move them round....

I had a bunch of plastic plants in the tank, but I noticed the oscars didnt seem to be able to find the floating pellots in the tops of the plants.
I should of cut them down come to think of it but thats too late, I tossed them all.
I'll have to pick some up soon I guess and give it another go.

I like that background on your tank, is that a 3D type of a stick on the back kind?
And your lighting, what is it?
Like I said my lighting sucks, but I have two 40 Watt Compact Fluorescent units I could use but I'm afraid of algae.

Your tank looks great btw.

Heres my 86 Gallon Planted:
