OK!! so my Oscars have finally layed some eggs..... Questions......

1)... What colour should Oscar eggs be??

2) .... Who guards the eggs.. (male or female) Looking at the ovipositor shapes, I'd say the one looking after the eggs is the male, and he keeps the female (and other fish away)....????

3).... If white eggs??... are the fish infertile or could it just be water conditions??

:band: :band: glad you actually managed to spawn them, congatulations,,,,
when you say white, do you mean like pure white, or of the transparant clearish white?
if they are moudly, it could be due to either having two females/male shooting blanks/just there 1st time, not usual to have a sucessfu 1st time but you never know

also ludwig, this should help you

hope your friend gives you good shares in the spawns as what you did :shout:

the easiest way to tell if they are fertilised or not is to wait, after about 12 hours any unfertilised ones will either be eaten or go mouldy. if they go mouldy you will want to remove them as the mould will eventually spread to any egg fertilised or not, and destroy them.

both mum and dad hover over the eggs, fanning them to circulate air and will chase off any fish that gets near.

if the oscar guarding eggs is chasing off the other parent, chances are its mum guarding the egg and chasing dad off. first time dads are notorious for trying to eat the first batch of eggs :)

The colour of milk white..... but unfortunately, I'll only see them again tomorrow (Friday), but if they are anything like Convicts or Blue Acara, I suspect that they will breed soon after the eggs vanish now that the ice is broken....

I am surprised Shelagh hasnt seen this yet, good luck with rearing the fry do you plan on selling all 200+ fish?

By the way your O's are beautiful

Lookit the eggs on that rock..... 200+ is way under-estimation.... I would say 3 500 to 4 000+ (but that does not matter any longer as they were all eaten on Thursday afternoon)

I am however, confident that they will lay again before next Friday.... Last night they were locking jaws again and the rest of the ritual, hovering around "their" rock..... and Sheilagh.... this happened 3 days after I handed them over... I transferred them there on Saturday last week, and on Tuesday they spawned..
