cool.....
i do like convicts but i cant have any ,, i have 6 tanks running at the minute and i think my hubby would go mad if i had any more ...
i love my oscar my son names him henry i dunno y i just said what shall we name him the first name he said was henry so its been that since we got him ,,,
hes an adorable fish ...
he begs 4 food all the time ,, then when i put a block of frozen worm in he swollows the lot then lets little bits out ,, hes 1 greedy guts ,,

i got 2 6" oscars, they grow so quikly!!!! does anybody else have this problem....
when u are out of food and get a diferent type of cichlid food, they keep spitting it out and fowling the water ! they eventualy tune to like ti, but my bps and frontosa love it, but the oscars spit it out...
any help wd b apreciated

1 time i tried mine on some cichlid type of food they are like a green ball ,, they didnt even touch it because they was expecting there bloodworm or other type of frozen food ,,, anyway i didnt give in ,, i didnt give them any frozen so in the end they eat them ,, now they like them ,, hahahah fussy and crafty ,

Henry, aww that's so cute My Oscar is Nostradamus.. I don't know why, I just felt like giving him a big fancy name.. heh. Most of my other fish have cute names though.. like Squirt (1 inch jack dempsey), Fluffy and Snowball (Pleco and albino Pleco).

What size tank do you have your Oscar in?

My Oscar called Rosie. She's just about 1 year old now, and has chilled out totally, most laid back fish in the tank now, apart from feeding time, likes to make sure she's 1st, and always takes from my fingers!

The red tail was one of them "i must have" compulsive buys that we all do from time to time!

The tank is 6ft x 2ft x 2ft, i try to keep the caves and plants low so there is more swimming space available. The Oscar is just under 10" nose to tail, and the red tail is still small (for a redtail at least) at about 7.5" long, however, measuring across its head, its about 2.5" wide, so a very stocky fish!
The smaller cichlids in the background are blue acaras, i gave up trying to count them a long time ago, i only started with 4. There is also countless swordtails in the tank, i originally put them in as dithers when i had the acaras, and no Oscar. When i got the oscar, it was always the intention to remove them to somewhere safer when the oscar got bigger, but the 'O' isnt interested in them in the slightest, so i figured why bother.

Just for reference, there is also a common pleco (11") a sailfin pleco (8") and a syno. robbianus (7") in there. the syno does a wonderful job of keeping fry numbers low. might sound a little cruel, but if he wasnt in there the tank would be busting!

I recently got given 2 large tinfoil barbs (8" nose to LARGE tail), 2 silver dollars (4"), and, what i believe to be a "chalceus" which is in the region of 9" long. They certainly give the tank plenty of life!

it's a nice tank. what are you going to do with the red tail when it's real big? and i'm so suprised the swordtails are still in there lol with the oscar and the redtail which should both surely eat them. and i love acaras and SD's aswel. you might want to up the number of SD's they love shoaling. and the tin foil barbs will probably prefer a few more of their own kind. but other then that nice tank!

There is 2 public aquariums with an hourof where i live fortunately, so s/he will probably have to live there eventually either that or i seal the doors and windows and flood the ground floor

I've thought of getting more SD and tinfoils.. but i figured space would be an issue in the long run, especially with the size tinfoils can reach. From what i can see the SD are a pair, or at least one of each sex, so i was thinking of breeding them, and "making" my own shoal. It appears that the tinfoils are also one of each, there is no difference in markings, or colouration, but one is distinctly "fuller" and rounder than the other. I can't imagine them being as easy to breed as the tiger barbs i keep upstairs tho! might need a 4ft tank just for spawning!

breeding SD's needs soft water about a pH of 6 btw. and then a true pair, about 4/5inches long i think and then they need to be fed well and stopped from eating their own eggs etc.

i'll bear that in mind, thanks Probably wont have much problem when i get round to trying.. our water supply up these parts helps greatly there. Luckily (unless you want a rift tank), it's virtually pure and neutral, with only the slightest of traces of chlorine. Can't find any trace of nitrates
.

A quick picture, just for show. I usually leave a few cuttings of plants floating to give the swordtails someplace to chill out. i havent got round to getting water luttuce yet (lazy) Im amazed at how i still have plants, with the repuation that silver dollars carry, maybe the pleco that lurks underneath them scares them off! look closely and you can begin to see the scale of the Acara population boom!

Wow that's like my dream tank! I have 2 55 gallon tanks right now and they're great, I love them.. but when I move (moving to Australia next summer hopefully) I plan on having a huge tank like that custom built or something You can never have too much space for fish!

Ack gotta run! Nostradamus (Oscar) is looking like he's going to eat his buddy I just bought for him!
