So, I plan to get a large 75g+ tank in the future. Since I have decided this, I have been doing research and trying to figure out what I am going to stock this monster with. I have looked at many pet stores and online stores looking for that perfect fish. Many differetn species looked at....but then there was one that caught my eye!

I think I want a pair or Green Terrors. They are without a doubt some of the prettiest fish I have come across. I know they are highly aggressive and I can probably only keep a pair in a large tank together, but man, they are so beautiful. I think I could be happy having only two to watch for hours on end! Are they compatible with other fish? Or just with other green terrors? And how many can you keep without them getting aggressive?

Now, it is going to be a while before I do this, so I am going to research alot about these fish as I have never had cichlids before, and if any members have these beautiful fish, any input is definately accepted

Green terrors are quite territorial so if ur getting a pair and planning on breeding the put the female in about 20 min before the male also they arent compatible with many other fish (escuse the 'newbie' sign i only joined a few days ago but i know my stuff) if you want other fish make sure they arent big because the green terrors will see it as a threat if its the same size u can probs get 2 f and 1 m

To be fair I would have 1 Green Terror in there and then add in large Characins like Buenos Aeries (spelling) Tetras, some Headstander species could work nice and Silver Dollars would be a great addition and then thinks like Pictus Catfish or the larger Hoplo species would be good. Any of the medium sized plecs would work really nice.

I wouldnt try a breeding pair or a trio just because if they breed your tank will not have any other fish in - I think a trio would not work as they are a pairing cichlid not a hareem brooder and the spare female would get beaten up. If you do want to go the pairing route I would get 6 or more youngsters to start with and then wait for two to pair up and rehome the rest.

I have also heard of Green Terrors being good with things smaller than them selves like Blue Ramirezi said so worth thinking about that. Though the species I mentioned there would be safe as a good GT will make 8-9 inches if not more.

Wills :)

That's a good idea. I've never owned cichlids before. I have a livebearer community so I am looking for something different. I would like to have a variety, but I definitely want a GT, so if that cuts my variety down, then so be it. I'm planning on 75+ gallon tank, but what would be optimal for this type of fish, expecially if I plan on having some others? I read on line the 55 gallons is recommended for a pair, but IMO that seems rather small for a pair of fish the get 10 inches a piece. Expecially aggressive types.

Green terrors are very nice fish, I used to have a pair a few years ago: they came with the tank I bought, but unfortunately the tank wasn't big enough for them, so I had to find them a new home eventually. I can highly recommend that you go for a tank which is at least 120*50-60*50-60 cm in size (4*2*2 ft).

I kept my pair on their own for most of the time, but they did moderately well with a common pleco for the time that he had to share the tank. If I was to keep them again, I would definitely try for a much bigger tank as they can be mixed with other cichlids if space allows. I would also add a lot of rooty wood and do plants again (I had success with Anubias, Java fern, Java moss tied to wood) and would investigate the possibility of keeping them with a large tetra species, one of the ones which grows to 4" (note investigate, I never looked to see if this was a realistic option).

Oh yes, I was definatly thinking of a long tank this time around. Right now, I have a ten gallon, and a 40 gallon tall hex. I was definatly thinking 125 for this type of fish, but I would really like to go as large as 200gallons. Like i said though. I am in the planning phase lol. I still dont even have the tank yet. I have been looking for a nice second hand. I figured with a new type of fish that I have never owned, I am trying to plan this tank carefully, as I know it will be alot different than what I am used to, which is livebearers.

My other thought was a 75+ gallon long tank with different schooling fish, like different varieties of tetras. I would love to have a tank with cardinals, black neons, green neons and such. various schools of 15+ fish a species, which could be done very nicely in a large planted tank :) SO MANY OPTIONS!! :hyper:

This is also a nice idea and is similar to what I have done with my current display. What about doing a bio-tope? I always find them a lot of fun and very interesting!

Where can I find recources to research that? That way I can find an environmental set-up that I like and research specific stockings? That would be really neat. (I'm getting really excited about the many things that can be done!)

There aren't any good generic resources for this. First, I'd start with deciding which fish species (only one) you want to plant this around, then go on Fishbase.org and look up what lives in the same ecosystem (which completely ignores all compatibility issues).

seriouslyfish and planet catfish have search options to find fish that are from the same river - on seriouslyfish you just type a river - eg tapajo into the search bar and it gives a good list.
