Hiya, im new to these forums but ive been keeping fish for 10 years myself and my dad has kept then sinse he was a kid as well.

at the moment in my room i have a tropical tank which is 14 inch's wide, 41 long and 17 high. how do you work out how many gallens is in it casue i cant remember how the hell to do it, and ive lost a book that tells you how lol.

anyway for my new tank project im goin to make a new one from scratch to fit into a gap in my room. the size im planning on makin it is, 14 wide, 60 long, and about 19 high. and if some1 again can work out how many gallons is in there would be a great help  . first im goin to have to make a cabnet type thing to fit into this gape which wil be fixed to the walls and will be made to have an elephant stand on it so the tank wont go and falls off or somethin with the water in  . also the glass thickness will be taken into judgement and sealing it up with sealent.

this is goin to cost me a few bob but over a period of time the cost will be ok and being a builder i have the skills to construct the tank itself as well ast he cabnet.

if any1 has any ideas or somethin i havent thought about then i would like to hear other peoples views on my little project. if any1 is wondering why im doin this in my room. i dont no why myself yet but o well.

Cant wait to see pics :D

Tank volume is a piece of cake. Just find out the cubic inches (L x W x H), then go on over toonlineconversion.com, select volume conversions, and convert cubic inches to gallons :D

Your first tank is 9758cu inch otherwise known as 42 gallons
Your planned tank is 15960cu inch otherwise known as 69 gallons

I'd get some help building this tank if i were you. Not that i doubt your skills, but 70 gallons of water exterts an incredible amount of pressure, and weighs alot more than you think it is. Its pretty easy to make a small mistake and have it end with 70 gallons of water somewhere it shouldnt be.
Before you build this epic tank, it might be good practice to make a little 10 gallon hospital tank or something.

yea there will be a heck of alot more weight, so will be getting some hefty stuff to make shore it wont go anywhere. will have 2 look under floor bords first to find the strong areas and week areas. as for a hospital tank i will have the old1 somewhere out the way incase of a disaster lol.i was thinkin that i mite try and grow plants in it as well but that will proberly be a pain in the ass.

thanks for your advice tho :good: . more ideas or advice will be a great help. also will post pics of the making of it all if any1 wants to have a look :)

I mean you should build the hospital tank first, so incase your build method isnt right, or if you make mistakes you can learn from it when you build the 69 gallon. Im not talking about the stand, or your house, i'm talking about your tank seams and glass placement. If you miss a seam, or dont layout the glass right, your tank will catastrophically fail, either dumping water all over, or shattering.

(for the record, your floors can support a 69 gallon easily)
