Thanks Invader, expect to see the pics on WW's. The substate is blue slate chips I picked up from a DIY store in the UK 'B&Q'. It's considerable cheaper than buying aquarium gravel but a nightmare to clean prior to use.

How did you clean it exactly? I really want to get some, but I'm scared it'll harbour some sort of horrible disease :p.

It comes in bags and actually says on the bag suitable for ponds and aquariums. Because of quantity I didn't use a strainer to wash it through, I pored it into large containers and mixed it up with water to lift the sedement out and pored it away.
