Well i finally decided to take the plunge and start up a Lake Malawi tank. The plan was to use my fluval 120L tank but i sold it to my mum with every thing in it including the fish, int and ext filters for the price sum of £120 (bargin if you as me). I decided on the juwel rio 240 as my new tank so with that and £345 later i had my new tank (only just fitted into the car as well. I then spent the next few days washing sand and the ocean rock (that was fun) and got that into the tank. I have decided on usuing a fluval 405 filter as well as the internal one that came with the tank, the more filtration the better. £650 later and still no fish in site. here is how mytank stands at this min still a fair bit more bits of ocean rock to clean, but nearly there.

Looking good!!! Can't wait to see it stocked. Keep us posted.

As the others have said, looking good so far!

What are you going to stock with?

That's a fine start - big enough and tough enough to cope with Mbuna.

Don't forget the adult size of a common will restrict your total stocking levels of Mbuna a little. I have an adult common and a couple of Synodontis Eupterus in my Rio 240 and therefore only have 12 Mbuna in there, which is a relatively small number considering the principle of overstocking Mbuna tanks.

sorry to hijack, but I would like a plec for mine if I were to remove some mbuna but do you have to have bog wood for them? I like the fact that I dont have wood in my tank.

Not for a common or Bristlenose, which are pretty much the only Plecs that could, or should be kept with Mbuna - wood is not an essential part of their diet. Panaques would be a different matter but then i wouldn't risk a Panaque with Mbuna anyway. :D

thats good to know didnt really want and bog wood in my tank. finally finished putting the ocean rock in the tank nearly 1 hour of messing about with the layout until i was 100% happy. just need to finalise what mumba iam after.
