These are looking good! I tried to keep some red crystal but sadly failed :(

Are they high maintenance? I had them in a tank on their own but they ended up in shrimp heaven.

I had planted bogwood and moss balls - not sure where I went wrong though.

Any advice?

Lovely! I'm looking to get some of these, but the only ones i can find for sale are babys and are tiny, i'm nervous about buying them!

They are not high maintenance, but they do require stable filtered water and can not tolerate ammonia or nitrites of any kind over a sustained period. As long as it is a cycled, matured tank which is not overfed and has a decent maintenance schedule then you should be ok. IMO, the Black Crystals are much nicer though.

My tank is nearly 6 months established and is very steady in water quality. I have it planted quite heavily with dwarf lilies in bogwood, parrot feather, 4 types of moss, and another plant I can't name. The planting is nearly essential to a successful shrimp tank. The shrimp thrive in a well planted tank and the plants help to maintain the water.

I feed once daily with dried krill, tropical fish flakes, and a small amount of shrimp or frog pellets. I also ad an algae wafer or two twice a week. I don't feed again until all the food is gone. This is essential as well to good tank. Shrimp are fairly sporadic eaters and just tend to graze and browse when they choose. Also be sure to remove the uneaten food after 3 days to prevent decay and ammonia spikes.

The crystal reds are not hard to raise. They are quite sensitive to water quality, but all shrimp are to an extent. I also like the crystal blacks, but I was unable to find any reasonably priced and went with crystal reds.

I've got the black crystals and they for some strange reason seem stronger than the red cherry shrimp they are in with.

As has been said so long as they are fed and looked after they'll do well.

One thing these guys can't tolerate is high temps, any where over 28 degrees and they die off very quickly  .
