it is a fancy UGF, the reason for the large gravel is to colonice bacteria. to change the biorbs filter you buy a whole new part which includes filter sponge and carbon
 
Why do you need to change the filter? That shouldn't be necessary.

i dont know exactly how the filter works but advice that comew with th biorb is every so many weeks change the filter cartridge and they cost £5 for a new one i think the filters in the biorbs work on the same principle as sponge filters i am not sure on this though so dont quote me
