I got this little guy nearly a week ago, hes got gorgeous rainbow colors. It's no secret bettas aren't looked after the best in pet shops...
So I just wanted to get some opinions on his health
Hes pretty skinny, but hes got a huge appetite!
Would this be caused just by not being fed in the shop or is it something more serious?

This one looks particularly bad...

Also I've noticed he has a little gap near the top of his tail, I don't remember seeing it when I got him so maybe hes snagged it on something

So can anyone shed some light on this for me?
Thanks guys

He doesn't look too bad at all! Probably just under-fed - you won't know if it something more sinister unless other symptoms show. If he's active, eating well, pooing well and generally looking good, than he just needs plenty of good quality noms.

agree with Assaye, although he still looks discoloured to me, maybe its just a little bit of stress, either way as long as he isnt resting on the bottom alot or not coming up for food dont be scared, most bettas (from what ive seen) tend to be abit funny in the first couple of weeks when you get them!

TBH, I think his colour is great. I've had a betta like that and the bright, patchy, pinky colours are their normal colouring.

I agree, hes a beautiful fish, a little underfed. but a good weekd feed and he'll be fine. very nice specimen.
feed frozen bloodworms one day a week, a deshelled cooked pea one day a week, flake 4 days a week and the last day is considerd a starve day.....,usually the day before the weekly waterchange.

but as saaid, he is beautiful and his finnage wil repair. good luck with him, he'slovely

he has a broken ray on his dorsal, food soaked in garlic and clean water will help him heal. Although, please keep in mind that he may well have poor genes and will need that little bit extra care to ensure he stays healthy.

pretty boy though x

he looks fairly normal to me-a bit of fin damage but will heal up nicely with clean water and good food. and i dont think he is skinny at all. generally good condition TBH. seems young. he will bulk up given time. important thing is not to overfeed him to try to put some weight on him. will only cause problems. feed him some frozen bloodworms if you are able (2-3 a day) for say, 3 days a week instead of just one (generally we feed as a treat-but in some circumstances it is better to use it as main source of food). not only will it help him with his growth, but also make his fins heal faster than feeding just flake/pellets. higher in protein which is good for tissue growth.
he is a purdy guy! i love his variety of colors. he reminds me of rainbow sherbet :)
cheers

take 1 main photo each week of him, say every monday and see if there is any color difference in him. Betta always have a surprise up their ventral sleeve

Thanks for the comments everyone. He's doing fine.
He's still got the hole in the top of his tail though.

he looks just like my Chilly! same colourings. beautifual! :)
