After many weeks of cycling and slowly stocking my tank with 5 x neons and 3 x sunset platies I have added my red siamese fighter. He has been in now 24 hours and is doing great swimming around happy, but I have noticed he has killed one of my neons???

Should I be worried???

I'll have whatever Tizer is drinking

How big is your tank and what are the stats? Did you see the betta kill a neon or just find the body?

My tank is 30L, what do you mean stats, stats of what? I didn't see it kill the neon I'm assuming as it had no head. It's flaring at the others at times then happy to swim on his own at other times.

Your water parameters would be your stats (test readings), the fact that it had no head isn't saying your betta killed it. If it died of any other cause then any of the fish could have eaten bits of it.

I have am API test kit and test every week. They are completely fine. Amonnia is 0, nitrites are 0 and nitrates at 20. I have made a makeshift plastic cage for my betta till tomorrow as I'm going to take him back to my LFS. He is very very aggressive and has changed the mood of the others they are scared and hiding. I'll replace him with a few fancy guppies instead.

Now you just need to go out and get a 75 gallon and buy an oscar named betta

it's a fighting fish, it's going to be aggressive? they prefer to be in tanks on their own.

I agree sausagewinkle, I rang the LFS today and they said no worries about taking him back. I'm going to go for a dwarf gourami I think as my centerpiece fish.

I have kept bettas with Platys, Swordtail, Harlequins, Cories....

Just as stated, it depends on the individual betta. Some will be petrified of other fish, some will pay no mind to other fish, and others will attack other fish.

I find that in communities, you will have better luck with Halfmoons and Veiltails. Crowntails tend to be a lot more aggressive the VTs and HM, so I don't recommend trying them in communities.

This is just IME though.

This isnt entirely true...

i know you can keep them with other fish but chances are your betta will attack it at some point. Not very many are gentle lol

i have a crowtail and he's VERY aggressive, killed a cory cat that was in the tank with him :/ now he's on his own and seems a lot happier. I'm not sure if their is a difference between the temperament of Half moons or Crowntails. Anyone here kept more than just one type?

I have a Doubletail HM, a Veiltail, and a CT, and my HM and VT are extremely chill. In fact, my veiltail got into the tank with my female veiltail and they didn't even flare at each other. My CT is a little more aggressive, but he is still chillax compared to CTs I have had in the past.
