After gravel vaccing this is how I replace the water drained.

The water in the carboy (I have 3) is temperature and ph balanced to the tank and of course dechlorinated.

* Note the bungee for safety.

Using this method allows the matched water to be added slowly causing a least amount of sudden change (which is paramount with Tanganyikan's).It also allows much more water to be changed.

1, fill 150L in plastic storege box (in the floor).. add blackwater/stress coat.. match temp.. run pond pump...

2, drain 150L from the tank..

3, pump the sorted water to tank vis spray bar..

:good:

drain directly outside as the aquarium is near door

then attach hosepipe to electric shower upstairs

treat aquarium with conditioner

then pump with hose downstairs and directly into tank

the water is a perfect temp, water added slowly so 100l water change done in no time

1) take lid off tank

2) fill 5 litre drinking water container, approx 20-25 times (tank = 240 litres) then pour water into a bucket then pour water down the sink (in the bathroom next to the tank; en suite type room)

4) clean sponges, fill tank (hose from outside goes through bathroom window and into tank), add conditioners and then place lid back ontop.

Done :)

normally i would get another family member to help. :)

picture is of a similar 5 litre water container

Sticking to classic 5 gallon bucket and regular water siphon. Only have 2 29gallon so its not to bad. Issue is taking my water bucket up and down stairs every time.

Sorry off topic guys but doresy where did you get ur tank rock from? any more pictures? looks lovely :)

im glad this topic has been done, its a nightmare trying to do my new tank. its upstairs, and although its easy enough to get rid of the water in the shower tray - we got rid of the bath - both the shower and sink tap are the wrong shape to hook up to a hose. resulting in many trips up and down the stairs with a 10L bucket. i need to get me some of those big containers to drain into and fill up from.

Hi, been asked this numerous times. It is hollow, artificial rock and yes it is great. Being hollow it offers fantastic caves and has no weight problems. It won't scratch or crack glass either. I easily remove the rock from one end of the tank to gravel vac (the fish then hide up the other end)then do the same for the other end. Then each time I make a new design then it's great watching all the fish establishing a new 'patch' Job's a goodun!

Thats the good news, the bad news is it's £14 a chunk and my tank has 10 chunks! Mind you I think it's worth every penny and so do my Cichlids

It can be purchased, on line, from zooplus.co.uk Check it out HERE

your decorative moon rock is exactly like the key largo rock I get from here --> http://www.marcorocks.com/ (except its real)

About Topic--- well I have 4 seperate tanks and I do all of the water changes every wednesday, they go pretty much the same.... gravel vac the tank with a loong 25 or 40 ft hose directly into sink/bathtub until atleast 50% of water is gone. Then just attach to sink and refill ( after adding 1.5 - 2 x recommended dosage of Prime for full tank ).... See I live in South Florida so temp. is not an issue, if I turn the cold tap it comes out almost perfect for the tank + or - a degree or two....In the summer the water out of the cold actually sometimes a little too hot... but fish adjust...
