Nice fish,

What size tank is he in?

I know if you read the recommended tank for these guys it 1000gall when fully grown  I know a few people who have Mbu in 50Gall tanks with a common Plec etc and looks amazing.

Tetraodon mbu

Common Name: Mbu Puffer

Other Common Names: Giant Puffer, Gold Ringed Puffer

Family: Tetraodontidae

Distribution: Africa : Congo Basin, Lake Tanganyika

Water Parameters: Temp: 23 - 26C (74 - 80F); pH:6.0 - 7.8

Personality/Temperament: Differ from puffer to puffer, from timid to very aggressive.

Activity: Hunter - fairly active

Max. Size: 67cm

Estimated Lifespan: Not known

Sexual Dimorphism: None shown

Diet: Feeding and Diet article

Care: Pufferfish are extremely sensitive to nitrites and ammonia and should only be introduced into a fully cycled aquarium. Due to the mbu's messy eating habits and enormous size, overfiltration is recommended.

Breeding: Awaiting information

Minimum Tank Size: 1000g(US)

Other Notes: This puffer more than any is a sociable creature that quickly bonds with its owner. Their temperament differs greatly from timid to aggressive. These are extremely big fish and should only be kept with an adequate sized tank and filtration.

Im assuming you have a huge tank ready for the chap :)

Thanks but yes I have read all this, He will be housed in the biggest aquarium possible. It won't be 1000 gallons though. who can provide this??

i know nothing about puffers but why does a 67cm fish need 1000 gallons?what would be the dimensions of the tank the fish only grows just over 2 feet long?

Mbu Puffers are active swimmers and hunters, they need space to do all of it, and when you are 67cm long by about 20 cm wide and tall that takes a fair amount of space ;)

i have seen a almost 2 foot long mbu living perfectly happy in a 8x3x3 thats nowhere near 1000 gallons

I'd say the only place that would be able to provide a 1000 gallon tank would be some sort of public aquarium. I say minimum for a full grown Mbu would be 300, that sounds reasonable to me it gives them plenty of space. Stilll a really large tank though. But what do I know  Oh yea, Great puffer by the way. He is indeed handsome.

nice puffer, I was wondering if I can get a full tank shot and also wondering what kind of filters do you use to filter your puffer?

I am working on afull tank shot, I currently use the internal rio 400 filter and an ehiem external aswell. However I just got a new electronic ehiem 2078 for x mas!!!

So i'm going to replace the old ehiwm with that. It's heavily overfilterd but you should see the mess he makes.

No such thing as an overfiltered oddball tank

I think 1000 gallons is way overdone, ideal world maybe, but an 8 x 3' footprint will be adequate even for an adult

Great pic and he does look very healthy

Steve :)
